Oh MY....
Found this forum by accident, I'm so stoked it exists!!!! I have a '77 Step with a 2001 Johnson 115. I use it for spearfishing so it's pretty bare bones, no nonsense machine. I have a ton of questions about so bare with me. I'll post pics asap....

Glad to see one more year design like that!
Welcome to the board! |
welcome to the forum! how does she run with the 115.. askin cuz it seems kinda small.
|
Nice to see more presence from down here! Welcome.
Ditto on the 115 question. |
Jack, you'd be surprised how well that boat does with that on it.
Mine when bought new in 1975 (by my Grandfather) came with a 125 horse and would do around 32mph, loaded for 2 people and a days worth of fishing stuff, back then beer was the main ballast, fuel and ice was secondary. |
I knew that question was coming. I'm the third owner. I am outboard tech and bought it from an older gentalmen that got too old to use it. Transom was replaced. Excellent job except they took the notch out so it's now a 25" transom, but they kept the old mounting holes so the motor is a little low, and I'm too lazy to redrill it. It runs 32.8mph @WOT. Yes it's on the slow side, but hey, I only use it for spearfishing and it gets pretty good gph.
Some specs: 2 20 gal fuel tanks(premixed) 2 1000cca 24 series batts 2 way fuel selector valve and a secondary valve- I can add a 3rd external tank Armstrong ladder on port side swim platform on stbd side 172qt fish cooler 72qt food/beverage cooler Garmin 545s Dual axle aluminum trailer |
Nice rig Mariner, very nice. That 115 pushes that boat just fine. My previous V had the 115 and it was on a bracket, did 34-38 depending on load and whether I had the enclosure up. Got up on plane fast and we used to take the whole family out (6) and do the tube thing and it had plenty of power. And like yours it sips gas.
|
okay so since we are on this topic my 200 yammy only pushes my v about 43 on a calm day is that normal or is that on the slow side?

Speed? We don't need no stinkin...
Gotta weigh in: First, welcome to this fabulous site. I've learned a boatload on this site, and some of it was about the V-20. When we head out in the '74 with two fat adults, three or four teens, plus assorted chillerens below twelve, it takes our 115 a little while to get up on plane, and then, wot we'll move darn near 28 mph :sun: (IFS--intermittently functional speedometer). That's enough to send the kids on the tube flying when we go round a corner. It's enough to rattle your fillings when you hit a ferry wake. And no matter what we do, we seem to burn two or 2.5 gals an hour. We swim, we fish, we putter around Woods Hole and nearby. But most of all, after being a sailor all my life, the V keeps my wife happy. That means more time on the Cape. We LOVE our V!
Nuff said. |

Sounds like wrong prop... |
:clap::clap::clap:
There ya go....a new member and his first order of business is to POST PICS and tell us about his boat! Welcome to the site. |
Reel im not sure if it is the wrong prop... it is a 17 pitch.. does yammy have a rev limiter? it is slow to get on step and turns about 5800 rpm's
|
Welcome bro !!!
|
Jack, sounds like somethings wrong with your Yammy, I would gues it would be spinning a 21P and jumping on plane. Does your boat have bottom paint? You might want to try some one elses prop incase you have one thats been missmarked
|
well this is the second 17 i have run on it and like i said its turning max rpm's unless the yammy has a rev limiter on it to stop it from over revving..
|
I'll perpetuate the thread hijack.
I've not yet changed the prop but the 150 horse on mine only turns 5100rpm and does 44mph with a 19" on it. I've got a 17" that I'm gonna try and see if I can improve the rpms, not expecting more mph but hoping for more mpg. |
oh yeah i forgot to say i do not have bottom paint.
|
Welcome Mariner!! Thats a nice looking 79 you got there. It looks alot like my 77. They are great boats! Glad you found this site.
