Motor ID help?
Hello all. Just recently purchased a beautiful 1976 step v20 powered by a Johnson 140hp o/b. However, the person I bought the boat from could not provide me any information about the motor. I would like to find out the year of the motor but only have the serial # 7207102 and a portion of the model number, J140T_ _ _. Any suggestions? Thx in advance.

we need the model number to give you a yr a picture will help some

Need more on the model #.
If it is missing, look at the welsh plug. This one is on a 150 horse. The CR dictates it to be a 1984. http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w...hplug150hp.jpg |
if that plug cap is still there, most of those fall out.

ok take us a pic of the power head and does it have 2 seperate packs running the coils or just one at the center of flywheel? that welsh cap would be center rear of your motor.
|
The mid section is an 85-87 style if it is in fact a 140 V4 looper under the cowling. Really need to see a pic of the powerhead though to id it much furthur. The welch plug if it's still there will be in the center upper rear portion of the engine in the recessed hole above where it has V4 embossed.

I think the cap fell out of the hole above the V$.

That is an 85-87 style 140. It came origanally with a small bore, but you have to pull the heads off to see if it has been replaced with a late model. The ignition systems and such are pretty universal from 85-87 with the exception of 85 having a 6100 RPM limiter and 86-87 had a 6700 RPM limiter.

Thanks you for all your help.

I notice 328624 stamped on the engine head, mine has the same number and mine is 1987 140 V4 small bore looper, however the heads are inter changeable...
To be sure if its a 87 , post the part number on the power pack I know for sure ..If its a 87 there is only 2 model for the 140's J140TLCUA 1987 and J140TXCUA 1987 your clearly shows a Tilt & trim so if its a 87 then its model J140TLCUA If you have a CDI pack install the number should be CDI 113-3101 |
the power pack won't help either due to you can put 85 to 87 wiring on V4 loopers up to about 94, and no that's not a TL model due to it's a 25 inch motor so is a J140TX**.
|
I stand corrected . If you cross reference the pack on CDI charts the 87 is unique ..
Here is how I found out what mine is, remember I went through the same thing and you guys help me big time ... I ref the pack numbers, screws on the butterfly 3 = 140 hp, numbers on the power head, numbers off the coils, numbers off the carbs, jets sizes and called it a 87 since :) It only took me 4 months plus ! |
85 is the odd ball, 86 and 87 both work the same in the packs. 85 is also the oddball in more ways than one. 85 had a unique intake different from all other 140's as well as a special tuner that didn't run for crap down low as it was HUGE. Remember that 85 was the first year of the 90 degree loopers, and the 120/140 were the first to hit the streets. The 200/225 V-6's weren't official until 86 once OMC had ironed out most of the looper bugs. The other problem is that so many parts are interchangeable on the loopers with only small changes and iding an engine that is over 20 years old after god knows how many others have wrenched on it is just about impossible unless you tear it down and go through every nut and bolt in it.

Jesus, how do you guys know this stuff? impressive to say the least.

well i've worked on them seems like forever OMC wise, and currently own 4 of the Johnson / Evinrude 140's one set is a counter set. plus have a complete set of J/E factory shop manuals for yrs 1980 to 2005 all hp's including the 4 stroke stuff by Suzuki. a lot of the guys here say i have the fastest fence in the south. it only has 730 hp on it lol.

lol that is an 87 Ferm with a low total of 430 hrs from a bass boat and it has never seen salt yet as it is from Lake Lanier Ga. I'm going to use it on the V20. other 225 is a 1990 that matches the frankenmotor as a counter set. the 2 counter 140's are BR's old 1990's. |
Motor is IDed
Thanks for everyones help, you guys nailed it. The motor is an 1986 I spoke with a previous owner. I also realized the VRO was disengaged, thats why I have to mix. Still runs good though. I love this site!!!!!!!!!
