External temp guage
I don't have an external temp guage on my Johnson 150. I would like to have one so that I can monitor engine temps rather than rely on the "over-temp" buzzer to let me know when I am too hot.
The question is where can I mount the sensor on the motor for an external sensor? I don't have a problem with the wiring or guage mounting, it's just finding a place to mount the sensor in the motor as not to hurt anything. |
I am a temp freak so I have two senders and gauges installed.
Mine is screwed into two existing treaded hole directly on the cylinder head, opposite the OMC Buzzer switch/sender http://www.go2marine.com/product.do?no=85152F |
I like the idea. I was thinking about trying to put something in the middle to get total water temp not just one side or the other. But this will help to narrow and temp problems to either one side or the other.

Single will not hurt but you may want to carefully drill a hole and tap it .. |
Will do. Thanks.

first what yr motor will help most have a hole already in place for temp senders

ok then it's not a looper. look at the top of the heads for a fine threaded empty hole near the t-stats. that's where they are installed.

I'll look tomorrow. Thank you.

so what I am hearing is that my 1998 Johnson 225 already has a spot for temp send? I would LOVE to hook that up! :sly:

I would also recommend a water pressure gauge. If I had a choice, I'd rather monitor pressure than temp. That's just a personal preference thing though..

Here is my hookup both starboard and port side, its nice to see the Temp on both sides just in case there is restriction on one side I guess ?

where's your temp warning sensor on the bottom picture of the head?
|
Both remove so is the horn, I am working on it :)
|
This is sorta what I was looking for. I was thinking of keeping the warning sensors just in case.
Thanks for the pics. |
yeah leave your warning sensors or your motor Al, I wouldn't suggest anyone removing those, as no one rides with the eyes on the temp gauge the whole time, a horn will tell you if something has issue in the case you were just drift fishing for example.
|
I am shopping on flea bay for new senders for the horn, I can't trust the old ones and besides it was never connected . I found one for 10 bucks shopping for another and I will connect it up to a horn and warning light for now I just pay attention to my gauges. Good point Skool ...
