New Man Cave

Well I have wanted to build since last year and I am now in motion!!

A couple of weeks ago my son and I dug a 100' x 4' deep hole in the yard by hand!! :bat: This runs the water and power under ground to the shed.
4' is necessary to keep the water from freezing here in the NE.

we then built the floor with some help of friends, wow was that a bit ch getting level and square!!!

Then the last 2 days to get all framed, now if I just can figure out the roof?? I want to make it a Gambrel so I have a 2nd floor  when I am done this thing will be same sq feet as my house!! CB says its to big, I say the bigger the better!

Here are some pic's

Has a 36" door on the right, and a 6' door on the front with two windows I am going to add another window on the 36" door side then a few on 2nd floor.

MJ it looks really nice but there are two things I would like to point out,

1) a straight trench uses less pipe and cable.

2) How come we only see others doing the work?

Good luck on your project.

Turbo

1. My son has no seance of direction!! But the hole was wide enough that the pipe went straight.

2. Cause I not stupid!! :hide:

If it'll w/stand all the phartin' that'll go on in that thing, it'll take anything the wind can throw at it!!...

macojoe 04-27-2009 07:45 AM

No wind rules, and T11 for the siding, You get up here I will give you 3 fishing trips :)

Stinky_Hooker 04-27-2009 09:20 AM

macojoe 04-27-2009 07:22 PM

It be destroyed for sure here!!

No work today, My truck had a front wheel berrin go today :cen: garage wanted $500, my son and i did it for $125 :sun:

msbhammer 04-27-2009 07:51 PM

WOW, really impressed MJ. Thats no shed, Thats an MJ garage for sure. Looking good.
What size ceiling rafters you going with ? I went with 2x12, but think that was over kill. Wish I would have gone with a 2x10 and save some cash.

My cousin came over today and wired up my garage. All I did was really watch, since I know crap about electriacl.

msbhammer 04-27-2009 07:52 PM

Oh, I dig the chick with the nail gun. Power tools and women are "HOT". : )-

Monkey Butler 04-27-2009 10:44 PM

Looks really good MJ. Glad to see that you are making progress before fishing take priority!

C YENSEN 04-28-2009 01:21 PM

my only question is why you used those pre-fab deck supports and did not pour concrete footers? seems like you are going to have trouble down the road if one or two of those concrete holsters sinks in a hard rain....

Blue_Runner 04-28-2009 01:23 PM

Nice work MJ. All this garage talk is getting me inspired. I have a few too many balls in the air right now. Hopefully sooner than later I will embark on a quest to build the Blue Runner man cave LOL.

macojoe 04-29-2009 11:32 AM

Thanks all.
CY the town will not allow any footings unless i was making it a permanent building then there is a whole host of things that had to be done ands lots more money to spend because of them!!
This way I call it a shed and i have no inspections or any other bull crap. All sand here and water does not sit on the ground, so mud not a bad thing here.
All I can do is build and see what happens over time?? Good practice for the next one, I have never built anything like this in my life!

That's OK...The chick w/the nail-gun looks like she knows what she's doin'...

Got anymore pics of her?? :hide:

C YENSEN 04-29-2009 02:20 PM

I hear ya....still probably could have poured some concrete and set the blocks on the concrete....would have been easier to level.....:head:

macojoe 04-29-2009 05:55 PM

Whats level mean??

Thats my uncles girl friend, she is 52 and has a ton of energy!! We showed her how to use the gun and she stole it!! Dam women always taking the power tools:nice:

C YENSEN 04-30-2009 07:22 AM

macojoe 04-30-2009 08:57 AM

Its almost level, Its square, whats plumb?? See what happens this next winter? Started the sidding yesterday, hoping to have all done this weekend but the roof. But we are calling for some rain

Mac_Attack 04-30-2009 09:26 AM

Nice job MJ. Don't forget to put the third pipe in for the cable TV. Billy Mac

Blue_Runner 04-30-2009 11:33 AM

2nd what Mac said about the cable....and get yourself a little woodstove for the cold northern winters. When I build I'm definitely going with a woodstove.

macojoe 04-30-2009 11:57 AM

Just like in a boat, I have a rope in the tube underground just to be able to pull other things thur!
Wood stove will be in there! :nice:

C YENSEN 04-30-2009 02:14 PM

so are you putting in a porcelain throne?

axespino 04-30-2009 11:13 PM

Whats the square footage and are you using a set of drawings or build as you go. I need to build something for my mom but don't want to get a contractor to do it. Any info you have will be appreciated. Thanks

macojoe 05-01-2009 12:28 AM

16 x 24 = 384 sq, but I am doing a Gambril roof so I will have a 2nd floor for storage so that's 768 sq
Building from my head, no plans (now that's scary!!) I am not a builder at all and I have made a few mistakes and I am sure there will be a few more to come! But it will be solid and last as long s I am alive that's for sure.

Cost for the basic building is about $5000 I am sure after flooring the 2nd floor and doing the electric and water I will be at $6000

Heck my house is a ranch 30 x 24 768 sq, They are the same!! My wife asked if I was going to live in it, I said if need be!

phatdaddy 05-01-2009 06:11 AM

"gambril roof"
not familar with that term

Is that wind talking or yankee talking for gabled rooF?

nipper 05-01-2009 07:51 AM

Not wind talking at all. He means a gambrel roof. Kind of hard to describe, but it does exist. Just google gambrel roof and I think you will immediately recognize the style.

Skools Out 05-01-2009 07:58 AM

hey MJ come on down once you're done with the siding, then you can help put siding on my shop :sly: it's a little larger but no biggie. it 40' x 60' with 16 ft walls.

C YENSEN 05-06-2009 02:56 PM

how is it coming??:pic:

Blue_Runner 05-07-2009 10:14 AM

Gambrel roof = aka a barn-style roof.

My house has one and looks a lot like a barn....ask skools, he has seen it.

I built my house when I was 23 and only had 1 bedroom w/all living quarters on the 2nd story. It is 28' x 36'. Without the gambrel roof there wouldn't have been much room at all upstairs. Now since I've had kids I finished off the bottom half which used to be kinda like a garage. Put in 2 bedrooms, laundry room, a full bath, and nice big closets. Looking forward to add on a garage with an extra room upstairs very very soon. My builder said he'd be ready to start in a month...that was 3 weeks ago. Foundation is in and part of it is already concreted.

MJ - what kind of stairs will you use to access the upstairs? Stairs inside or outside? How wide? If inside the stair casing can take up a lot of room. I'm assuming it will be inside and only wide enough to be practical as to not use too much space but still be able to carry stuff up to the loft.

Looks good, wish I could start building a shop.

macojoe 05-09-2009 05:54 PM

well time for a update

It will be inside and it will be as small as i can get away with. s you will see I have let the building get away from me some!
Permit said i could be 16 x 24 and no more then 20 feet tall, well its now 19' 10":zip: And I think i hve to pile some xdirt around thwe building to help with the measure!!

Monkey Butler 05-09-2009 06:19 PM

That is one heck of a temp building. Nice job.

Noticed the Seacraft in the yard, what's up with that?

macojoe 05-09-2009 08:23 PM

The Seacraft belongs to BS I was storing it for the winter for him.

chumbucket 05-09-2009 08:29 PM

You could have offered him indoor storage if this project was started earlier.
You're out of control!!!!!!!!! :oh: I think you're pushing the building permit envelope regarding what's considered a shed.
