Outboard Insulation Replacement

I have a 1989 200 HP Johnson. It is pretty loud because the person who owned it before me removed the insulation as it was deteriorating and falling onto the engine. Any suggestions on how to replace since I am sure it will make a big difference in the amount of noise.

i have one of my 225's someone has replaced it in i'll try to get pics of the material

That would be great.

A lot of the boating retailers sell that insulation by the sheet. I forget if it's self adhesive or you use a spray on adhesive. Either way, it shouldn't be too difficult a job.

There is also this stuff you can paint on that is supposed to work well, but it ain't cheap. I will have to dig up the name as I forget, but I know West Marine had it.

Re

Can the AC insulation sheet at Home Depot work? Check in the insulation isle it's laminated on both sides with a aluminum like material. Its widely used in the AC insulation industry.
Different thickness to choose from.
I am planning on using this on mine also. I will use polyester resin as the glue to secure it in place.
If any one thinks this is a bad idea please let me know and I will not go this route, this just a thought for now.

Wouldn't the insulation inside an engine compartment need to be flame-proof?...:head: ...I would think an engine mfgrs ' LIABILITY would be hangin' out about 3 miles if they used a flammable material

Overtons, Boaters World, West all have replacement kits...

nymack66 02-27-2009 01:13 PM

Flame proof ?
I am not sure if you have flames under the Cowling having flame proof matters you will go Kubul any way :)

macojoe 02-27-2009 03:54 PM

AC stuff will not work, it is a filter not a insulator

Skools Out 02-27-2009 04:39 PM

thats probably what yamaha used on their older ox66's, because those cowlings were heavy as hell.

THEFERMANATOR 02-27-2009 05:43 PM

Why do you want to make it quiter? I've actually made mine louder. 2 strokes are supposed to growl at yeah is my philosophy.

Sea Monkey 02-27-2009 08:35 PM

This is why i love this site. Tons of great info. Don't want it quiet just quiter. Don't want to scare all the fish:hi:
