Which type of 2 stroke oil?
Being that I bought my boat towards the end of last season and I never owned an outboard prior to this I am looking to make my first purchase of 2 cycle oil. Whats the deal on this? should I only use Yamaha oil? Wally world by me sells Quicksilver for $25/gallon, Penzoil for $20/gallon and some other brand I cant remember for like $12/gallon.
What do I buy? |
Imo as long as the oil you get is rated tcw3 i dont think it matters. I have used penzoil forever with great results. The walmart brand oil would be fine as well. Its according to what kind of money you are wanting to spend but for me its splitting hairs.
|
Pre-mix or injected? I personally run PENNSOIL synthetic blend in mine, but WAL-MART is discontinuing sales of it and is switching over to the QUIKSILVER stuff. QUIKSILVER is just an okay oil that I feel is VERY over rated for what it costs. EVINRUDE XD-30 or 50 is also a good oil that is said to work very well as well, but is a little more costly to buy(unless you buy it in bulk). YAMALUBE is also a decent oil, but I never bought into the hype behind it as I always had plug fouling issues with it.
|
Wally world TCW3 for me $10 a gal here, been using it for years!! But i premix. If you are injected the you better using something a little better like therm!
Also if your motor in new then you should stick to the makers brand till your warranty runs out. |
I'm a pre-mixer as well, just the PENNSOIL smokes less. I don't really mind it so much, but my other half raises HE!! about it:zip:. Something about it gives her headaches, it affects me differently:love:.

thanks for the responses so far. I am still using the VRO injection. And motor is 1986 so no worries about warranties there.
|
I always used the Pennsoil XRD (??) its the yellow jug of 2 stroke for older outboards, or I would use the Pennsoil premium when I had my Johnson. Both were about the same, usually which ever one was in stock. You can get them both at Bass Pro if you have one. Now I am using YamaGold, damn that crap is expensive.

Used Wally-World oil all last season, knock on wood.....no problems at all.

So Therm, you are saying you are like the rest of us two strokers, (imagine "Ride of the Valkyre" playing in the background) and said with a deep scratchy voice- " I love the smell of two stroke oil in the morning" By the way, I buy whatever is on sale, at Wally world, West marine or whoever has a good sale, I have the VRO still hooked up and so far, even with mixing real and synthetic, as long as it has tcw3 on the label, I have had no issues, so far. (I better go stroke my lucky rabits foot, now that I said that) |
I would think that even the cheepest oil you can find now would be superior to what they had in 1986.
But what do I know, my motor doesn't burn oil.........yet anyways. |
I would actually stear youy away from the PENNSOIL XLF, been alot of reports of people running it and having excess smoke from all of the detergents it has in it. With oil injection I would run a better oil than just the cheapest you can get. If you can find it, SUZUKI has an EXCELLENT 2 stroke oil for oil injected engines.

Maybe that's why it blew up...I would like to think that :bat: -Svence |
PENNSOIL synthetic blend is good oil, but the newer XLF has been linked to aalot of carbon deposits on the prop hubs and black oil running out of the prop from running it.

WalFart Supertech brand, 10 bucks a gallon, 50:1 premix. The pleasing aroma is half the reason I use it.
|
I have about 10 gal right now, i buy 1 or 2 everytime i go to wallyworld thru the winter, by the time summer comes i have all i need for the season. I hate having to go get some at the last min!!

"thanks for the responses so far. I am still using the VRO injection. And motor is 1986 so no worries about warranties there. "
If it was mine, i'd find out what the previous owner has been running & continue that. 23 years on a VRO is a pretty good endorsement. most on here will tell you that hand grenade should have gone off 15 or 20 years ago... |
BassPro usually runs a special in the spring that has the Penzoil Synthetic blend for $11.00 a gallon. Plan ahead and buy it on sale and it's the same price as Wally World oil.
I have used it for the last 3 years with no issues and I agree with Ferm it seems to smoke less than the other stuff. Kamikaze |
penzoil synthetic here too.....and 17 years on my VRO

I am at a lost I am currently using Pennsoil XLF, Question is there another ? Please let me know exactly which one I need to switch to, you are right this one smokes a lot ! |
Run the regular PENNZOIL premium plus synthetic blend. They both cost the same, but the premium plus seems to burn alot cleaner than the XLF from reports I have read. I have only run the premium plus and QUIKSILVER in my current EVINRUDE, and can attest that the PENNZOIL is ALOT cleaner running.

Thanks, FERM

The shame about the big Suzuki was that it had ran flawlessly for 3 years on Suzuki oil. After a several month rest over the winter it failed on the first trip. The major brand oil had turned to a blue gel in the injection tubings blocking flow. I was there, and I pulled the powerhead down....it ruined the whole powerhead including the crank. $3 grand later everything was OK. |
Yep, I've heard of that happening before with the SUZUKI oil. SUZUKI used an additive in there oil that causes gelling inside the filter. It looks like little strings of plastic inside the filter after it sits for awhile.

I've always had good luck with walmart oil. A friend gave me a few gallons of I believe it was Johnson oil a few years back and it took me a few years to burn it all out. 70hp nissan took a while to burn much oil. He didn't like it because it smoked alot and I can confirm it smoked more than walmart. Worked fine though.
The guy I bought my Mako from said he had recently switched to the penzoil synthetic oil. It does get an oily out of the prop hub which he said started when he switched oil. He gave me 2 gallons and when that's gone I'm going back to walmart. It worked great in the 200 oceanpro on my last boat. An old 2 stroke is gonna smoke at startup. |
My rule of thumb is to use a manufacturers oil. These guys know that they have to warranty their motors so they have a better quality oil. The Walmart in my town has the Quicksilver and the Evinrude xd-25 for @ $22/gal. We've always referred to Penzoil as "yellow death". The last advice that I have is that if you are still using the VRO, premix a little oil in your gas as insurance.
|
I have 15+ gallons that I've collected from blown engines that I've parted out . . . Should be enough to get me started this year :) I haven't had to buy oil for the last 3 years.
|
I always used Yamaha oil for my Yama' 90 even tho' it cost a couple bucks more cuz oil is cheaper than steel. I also ditched the injection system
In a pinch tho',...any TCW-3 should be OK. |

Back when I was still 2-strokin', I saved a couple of gal-sized oil bottles...took them to my dealer and he filled them from his 55 gal drum at a huge discount:news:

My local dealer has bulk oil for $8/gal.....BYOB (bring your own bottle).
|

|
I just counted how much i have in stock, I use walmart and i buy a few gals every time i go to stock up for the summer, They seem to run short all summer and I hate needing it the night before a trip.
I have 22 gals right now, I hope that will get me thur the season?? |
