Boat Cover Part Deux
Did anyone have December 12th in the boat cover death pool?
I got hit by the ice storm last week. We lost power at 11:00PM last Thursday and are still out. I am very fortunate to have been spared any damage to speak of while many around me have not. My daughter was driving home from school in VA and thankfully got home around 10:00PM just before the worst hit. It was a long night listening to trees and limbs crashing down around us. Here is what I woke up to on Friday morning. http://www.monkeybutler.com/help/01.jpg Actually the frame was holding up pretty well but it sustained a direct hit by an ice covered branch. It's an easy fix. Some of my neighboors were less fortunate. http://www.monkeybutler.com/help/02.jpg http://www.monkeybutler.com/help/03.jpg There are other people in my neighboorhood who sustained damage to their homes that has left the interiors exposed to the elements. I'm praying for fair weather for these folks until they can get them patched up. It was crazy out on the roads, driving over, under and thru downed trees and power lines. Here are some random photos that we took. http://www.monkeybutler.com/help/04.jpg http://www.monkeybutler.com/help/05.jpg http://www.monkeybutler.com/help/06.jpg http://www.monkeybutler.com/help/07.jpg http://www.monkeybutler.com/help/08.jpg http://www.monkeybutler.com/help/09.jpg http://www.monkeybutler.com/help/10.jpg http://www.monkeybutler.com/help/12.jpg http://www.monkeybutler.com/help/11.jpg http://www.monkeybutler.com/help/14.jpg Sunday night crews showed up on our street which was sooner than I expected considering all of the damge around us. http://www.monkeybutler.com/help/15.jpg http://www.monkeybutler.com/help/16.jpg These guys came a long way to help us out and I appreciate them being away from their homes and families this time of year. Power is still out but I'm glad that they are working on it! |
Wow, that is some serious damage. I heard it was very difficult to get gasoline since so many stations were without power. So, even those with generators have no power because they cannot get fuel to run them.
|
man that looks like the aftermath of a hurricane but with ice all over. do ya'll have blizzard deductibles up there?
|
THAT SUCKS......Delmarva power is from my neck of the woods....
|
Fortunately I can drive 15 minutes and be in an area thtt had virtually no icing and get gas. Folks further north are not so lucky. This will make me rethink storing the boat with an empty tank.
I won't be testing my insurance but a big concern around here is ground water. Sump pumps are the norm. We had a lot of rain with the ice and if your basement floods you normally are not covered. If your roof leaks or a pipe breaks then insurance pays, if the water seeps in then you are on your own. The linemen from Delmarva were woking in conjunction with a tree service crew from Ohio. It must make for a long ride in those trucks. |
same thing down here, if a hurricane hits and your roof blows off and your house get rained it, home owners covers it, if the wall of water hits your house, flood insurance kicks in.
|
What a mess! Glad your house wasn't torn up MB!
|
I have been watching all that on the news, that was a bad one!!
Here in Wareham just this side of the canal was all rain, we got 3.98" I also work in Eastham and the same all rain! I was a bit worried as the Gov. put us in a state of emergency and I can't leave my job when that happens, and had to wait for my supervisor to get the all clear to let me go. I hate winter!! Never know when we going to get stuck at work for who knows how long! |
Good grief!!!
Makes me think of hurricane Ivan and Katrina....lost power for 11 days at my house during Katrina and about 5 for Ivan. I cant imagine snow and ice doing that much damage! How do yall stay warm without power? Dont yall use some type of heating method other than central HVAC up north? All we have is central....I have a fireplace in my living room but central is enough to keep any house in the south warm no colder than it gets. What kinda high/low temps are yall having? |
As I said I am very fortunate to have been spared any major damage. We got power back Monday night (4 days) but the home across the street from me had the lines ripped off the pole and is still out.
Most around here burn heating oil or natural gas to run hot water heating. I am still running an old oil/steam system though. If you can power the burner then you can get heat. I wired mine to my generator the first night. It got below 20 degrees outside Friday night and but it warmed up after that. If it dropped for a couple of days then burst pipes are an issue. Neighboors house got down to 40 degrees without heat. There was some beauty in it all though. Here are some artsy-fartsy pictures that I took. http://www.monkeybutler.com/tmp/01.jpg http://www.monkeybutler.com/tmp/02.jpg http://www.monkeybutler.com/tmp/03.jpg http://www.monkeybutler.com/tmp/04.jpg http://www.monkeybutler.com/tmp/05.jpg http://www.monkeybutler.com/tmp/06.jpg http://www.monkeybutler.com/tmp/07.jpg |
There are some great pic's there Monkey! What you got for a camera??
When we get hit hard and there isn't going to be power for some time, we retreat to the camper. Has propane gas for cooking heating and even the fridge! Battery's are solar charged, but you still need to be careful at night cause you can drain them running to much stuff. I use to have a small Gen at one time and it blew, I have never replaced it. |
Yall explain this heating oil thing for me? Is it a system run through your house like regular central, just uses oil to heat instead of electric coils? Why? Does it get hotter?
|
There is a central oil burning furnace which is fed by a large tank of oil. In most of those systems, the furnace produces hot water which is fed through copper pipes to distribute heat throughout the house (either through radiant units or units which blow air over the hot water tubes).
You asked about temperatures. It has been in the teens at night and 20's during the day for about a week here in Indianapolis, IN. |
Gorgeous pix Monkey!
|
Oil is also used in water filled radiators, or in forced hot air. I have forced hot air with natural gas.
|
that sounds very pricey to operate a heat system like that.
|
I think its close what you southern boys pay for air?? I( pay about $1600 a year for Gas, thats heat and hot water.
|
probably so, when fuel was high electric bills would be a 300mth norm
|
I think that burning oil evolved from the old days when coal was the norm around here. I remember growing up in houses that still had the old coal chutes and bins. Many of the oil dealers still had names like Joe's Coal & Oil.
MJ, it is a Nikon D40. My daughter has a D80 and they are both great cameras. |
OK, I am with yall now.
] BTW....been 75 here for the last week....Im ready for some cooler weather. Shouldnt be running the damn AC in December! Its also like 95% humidity...muggy!!! |
That looks like a classic North Carolina Piedmont ice storm right there.
Hope you had enough milk and bread!!!!! |
