Is this normal for mrec?
Ok Getting ready for are trip out this week, I charged the battery's and got the motor running.
Tell tail was doing nothing but small spit, after the Tstats open was pushing ok. At 800 rpm the water had some steam to it (49*) I put my hand in it and it was hot!! BS told me before that tstats are 140?? I used a thermometer in the stream of water and got it to reed 130* Heads were hot also. I then went up to 2000 rpm, water moved much better and water was now cool and heads were cool to touch. Is this normal for them on a hose in the yard?? Has new water pump also. Do I have anything to worry about Thanks |
Sounds normal to me. Mine does the same thing.
|
Thanks Air, I not use to a Merc, just trying to be sure!
|
Normal. Merc's don't pee until the T-stats open on a hose, in the water you will get a little before the stats open. Once the RPM's come up some the water bypass valve opens and cools the heads down. It's supposed to do this, if it doesn't then you have a problem.
|
Well i did not put in the water just on the hose and you are right it did not pee, but after pusing it to 2000 rpm it ran ncooler and peed ok, So I guess I am just
Thanks! |

What Tuna are runnin' up there now??... |
Yes the Tuna are running, Wed AM we will be there trying for are share! Well CB and a few will, I will be there cause I own the boat! My back could never stand the fight right now, But I will be happy just being there!
|
Are ya mixin' the oil in that thing or still relying on the auto-oiler?...
|
mixing!! the only way to go!
|
Merc makes a special set of muffs for their motors that seem to work best. actually 2 pieces that have a rod & spring clip to pass thru the motor & hold them together. probably my imagination, but mine seems to run in more "in the water" mode that the conventional muffs. don't know if they are worth the expense, but you don't have to worry about them vibrating off while the motor is running..
|
yep thats normal, but untln that water starts to flow im nervous too and why is evrybody want to run without the oil injector, my works fine, its a 1988 150 mercury o.b. 150
|
Yeps, thats normal for a Merc. My 200 Merc. did the same thing. Your good to go.

This is just my opinion based on what I have seen and read, you have to make your own decision. |
Do you have a water pressure gauge? What does it say at idle and on plane?
|
MJ doesn't even have a tach that works right yet or a compass. I'm going to try to get him hooked up this season with H20 pressure gauge.
|
I am torn between two names that are both fitting for MJ, my previously initiated "Wind Talker" and something that occurs to me every time I hear MJ prepping for a fishing trip " The Gambler"
What do you think CB |
no worry I always make it home and have never killed anyone yet.
And we always have a boat load of fish!! Right CB And Thanks BS, you take so good of me!! |
Correct! Mixing oil is the only way to go. I also believe in a water pressure gauge. The tell tale stream only works to alert you of a problem if you happen to be looking that way. The water pressure gauge is the cheapest gauge on your console and can save you much money. I've had one on every motor since an ice bag was caught on my lower unit 45 miles offshore. The hot alarm went off seconds after a piston siezed.

Step72 - How did you get in? That's my worst fear. I have to get a kicker bracket figured out for my boat this year.

I've had 3 single engine boats with kicker motors; Aquasport 170 Merc 115 & 6 Evinrude kicker 1983 V-20 150 Johnson & 25 Johnson kicker 1990 24 Grady White 200 Yamaha & 9.9 Yamaha 4 stroke kicker That 4 stroke kicker really worked well. It was the one designed for use as a kicker with the big prop. It moved the 24 footer better than the 25 Johnson moved the v20. In the big Pacific swells I'd be sure to go with something that has that kind of torque. Around here the afternoon chop in the gulf of mexico is steep and rough but its usually moving the right direction from May through September. Anything is better than nothing, I proved that with a 6 Evinrude kicker getting us in over 20 miles. I've seen kickers lost off of hi-low brackets. If you get one, be sure to drill a couple holes and thru-bolt in addition to the clamps. |
