Just out of curiosity

How many of you are very worried about your current job status?
Starting to see quick slow downs in certain industries such as surveying, landscaping, new car sales, etc. Already know of quite a few companies that are beginning the layoff process.
Me, I'm self employed, just seeing a very sudden slowdown in available work.

Same here. My last job was a car salesman, I left that job in JULY of 2006. The last time I talked to the guys up there(about a month ago) they said that things haven't picked up at all in 2 years. Instead of passing over people who can't get financed, they now have to work deals for 2-3 weeks and practically give cars away to keep some inventory moving. I'm currently disabled/self employed, I do sidework when my body let's me. Here lately though sidework has gotten TOUGH, and I've had to stop turning away the stuff I shouldn't do just so I can keep the electric on. I for one think this massive bailout has screwed us all. Now the world market is in trouble, and I blame congress for trying to medal in something they have no business in. An economy needs to be run by itself, not manipulated by a government. It hurts us all, and only prolonged the inevitable.

Well the small company I work for is a Land Planning, Civil Eng, and surveying company.....and to say the least work is SLOW. the boss just had to lay off 3 more people which leaves 6 of us....

my job is safe for now, but I worry everyday.....:nut:

I had not paid attention to how bad it was getting till a couple of months ago. I decided to sell stuff I don't use that often, figured I'd save money from not having to carry the insurance and get some V money to boot.
Over two months have went by trying to sell (not donate) 2 minivans, 2 boats and a pickup truck. Finally sold 1 boat and 1 minivan.
I've come to the realization "I'm trying to sell to people like me".
If they have the money, they are holding out for a desperate deal.
And there are a PILE of things for sale in every department!!

I also am self employed and it's getting slower. I do service work on irrigation systems for a large landscape company. my work usually slows about now, so i don't know if it is the season or the economy. my wife works for the county school system, so i think she is ok for a while

I have been trying to sell my Jeep Wrangler for 3 months. Nothing wrong with it. I just emailed a guy and told him I would take $1000 less than Blue Book.:nut::nut::nut:

When you first started to sell it , the market was rabid buying any Jeep.
Now it has almost become impossible to get rid of anything.
Your price was perfect, thought it was a sold puppy.

I sold my PROLINE for $4000 under blue book, and $5000 under insurance BUC value. These are some tough times were upon, and the idiots in DC aint helpin a thing.

cterrebonne 10-10-2008 01:16 PM

yep no one wants to buy my stream either. everyone who is trying to sell somthing now feels the same way ficht owners trying to sell their engines feel.. i thought that was funny

Yes, I am concerned about my job. They have announced that they are moving a portion of manufacturing to Mexico and Poland. When it comes time for "involuntary separations" (they don't like to call it layoffs), I only hope they decide to use job skills rather than seniority as criteria for deciding who has to go. :cen:

tsubaki 10-10-2008 04:22 PM

At least around here the layoffs have been toward least productive (like it should be) instead of seniority. Know 2 companies in unrelated skills that are downsizeing in that direction.
A few companies have started voluntary seperations this week.

A layoff might be fun. Guess that's what happens when oil hits $30/barrel. I'll go fishing and hope the money I have saved stays worth enough to support me for a few years.

I work in the pharmaceutical industry.....lately they call layoffs at my company "ATS" or Adapting To Scale. It's all BS for when Lipitor goes off patent and others can make generic versions and we lose lots of money. So far I have been spared but eventually they will do it cheaper in China and I will have to start looking....I like where I live and don't want to move but, for me, there are no other options nearby. I may have to follow some friends of mine to NC.

charlie_the_tuna 10-10-2008 11:41 PM

not an issue.
ridership is up and the lirr aint going nowhere.
worst case, layoffs, my seniority is out of layoff range.
i have about 500 or more men under me.

randlemanboater 10-11-2008 07:57 AM

The worse the economy, the more people choose crime.....so I am ok......as long as the city doesnt go broke.

And my wife is a teacher, so she should be good too.

During the fat times when people are making loads of money, public service doesn't seem so great, but it does now.

lumberslinger178 10-11-2008 01:44 PM

I guess I'm one of the lucky builders around now. I have just signed contracts on the Barnegat light train station built 1890.... renovating it to a single family home. so Im good for 7-8 months.
Being in a resort town also helps... most people here.. second/third homes cost more than my whole block.
So i feel some what blessed.
