Is My Season Over???
hey ferm, spare and anyone else. . . . . . i'm on my way back from a great day at the beach running at about 2,600 rpms. out of nowhere the rpms shot up and the boat slowed down. i tried again to get up on plane but the thing just wouldnt get up. i had to limp home at around 1,200 rpms.
thankfully i had that. it seemed fine at that speed. help! |
Was there any grinding or clunking when it happened? If not then check your prop hub, or try another prop. Sounds like a spun hub to me. If there was grinding then check your lower unit oil for metal. It could have also been your engine coupler, but I would suspect a prop hub first.
|
could have been a subtle clunking or knocking leading up to it.
not quite sure. felt kind of like running aground. how do i check the prop hub? |
Pull the prop off and look at the rubber inside. If it looks cracked or melted or any signs of tearing then it is probably bad. Spun prop hubs are not uncommon, and here lately I've read about quite a few people having to limp in at a fast idle because it wouldn't move if you went over 1500. You could also put it in gear and try to turn the prop by hand to see if it spins that way. One direction it will just click, but the other direction it should try and turn the engine over.

a spun prop makes a nice trolling prop (I found out the hard way)
|
with the engine off, and the drive trimed down, put the drive in fwd gear, spin the prop counter clockwise as viewed from the back of the boat till it locks in gear, then stand on the prop blade( port side of the drive) to try and turn the proop against the motor( still with the engine off), if the propspins freely, look at teh prop shaft while its spining to see if its spinning with it, if it isn;t, then the prop hub is bad, if the prop shaft spins with teh prop, check behind the engine for small rubber pieces(it looks like tar) or posibly aluminum shavings, indicating a bad engine coupler.
|
unfortunately spare, i'll hafta do the repair while the boats in the water.
gonna wait til low tide and swap out the prop with the oem aluminum. if this doesnt fix (temporarily) the problem then my season is done. and that will suck. phukking suck. |
Repalce teh prop like you said, if that doesn't fix you, you're coming out of the water regardless
|
Come on Chuck, tell us it's a spun hub and you're back in business. Don't give up yet. Good luck guy.
|
You killed your V, I'll take it off your hands, along with the hard top. Go Gayliner.
|
Its a spun hube.
|
Sure does sound like the prop to me especially that part about the RPM's shooting up. I know a good green jello diver that could probably swap that prop in a few seconds blindfolded with one hand tied behind his back...
|
yeah but he keeps asking me to look after his wife everytime he goes under.
hell i aint no puppy no more. i cant dam keep up. |
Well, have you put on your googles and went for a dive yet? Enquiring minds want to know.
Don't make me come up there! :bat: |
trim the drive up and sit on the transom, unless you are real short, you should be able to put your foot on teh prop and try to spin it
|
nah blue, cant go down til thursday. will know more then.
not a bad idea spare. give it a try when i get over there. |
Happened to me last year. Had spun the hub on the prop..Cost was about $70 for repair of prop.
|
Chuck, Charles, Charlie, Chaz, you need to align your priorities. You need to take care of that boat. Women and boats don't mix. Also remember, Hammer carries a gun.
|
yeah but he only has a 2 1/2 inch barrel.
