Pulpit install / assembly...
 

I slipped away for an hour (lunch) and started on my pulpit today. I've got some minor issue to work through, but the beginning was easy enough. Measure ten times, drill one...you guys know the drill...

I startd by marking the center line, locating the roller for proper end clearance, then marked my holes. I used a 1/8" bit for my pilot holes. After that, I flipped her over and cut a 1/2" recess with a 7/8" forstner bit so that I could recess the nuts on the underside...

And here is my one problem to work through. Just left of the pulpit, by maybe 1/2", is my chain pipe...

I'm not sure what I'm gonna do. Maybe I move it, maybe I throw the pulpit on the table saw and rip 3/4" off each side?

What should I do? More to follow...

Well, I guess I need to get moving on this project, cause until I finish I'm just gonna stare at my pictures. Somebody please tell me to do the right thing and relocate my chain pipe a little to the left.

I know its not the easy way, but it sure looks like the right way.

I've also had this other thought...Taking the drill press and a 4" hole saw and cutting a recess into the side just enough to clear the chain pipe. If I took the 4" saw and notched the edge of the pulpit......

I don't know ???

Take the cover from your pipe and put on the pulpit and draw it out, then use a hole saw to cut a Half moon on that side to fit the pulpit.

My first thought was to notch it......that will look extra custom.

If the rope looks like it will be unimpeded by the notched pulpit I vote for notching it. If it looks like the will be a chance for it to bind when letting it out I'd take the time to move it either onto the rear of the pulpit or farther to port.

What you guys have suggested was exactly what I had in mind. With the right (big) holesaw in a drill press I could make it look right nice. I took a dinner break, back at work now, and while on said dinner break...I got busy. I removed the cleat, nav light, and chain pipe.

I also took some pics sweety, er, Hammer ;D

Here I have removed the deck pipe and the pipe that goes into the anchor locker. The previous owner did a noce job on the install.

Things are moving right along. Once I figure out how to do this chain pipe, it'll be full steam ahead. Everybody still agree with MJ's drawing?

you may find it difficult to cut out only half a circle w/ a hole saw.....have you got a rotozip or a jig saw....or access to a band saw?

Phester, yes, yes, and yes. You think I'd have problems cutting half a circle in a drill press? You might be very correct. I dunno?

Clamp a piece of wood on top, align the pilot bitof your hole saw to the edge of the pulpit and you should be good to drill press it! Billy Mac ;D
