Blown trim manual relief valve
I installed my new motor for the power trim and tilt on my 1985 Johnson 150. Fill it with fluid and cycled it up and down after bleeding it. A few minutes ago i hit the button and trim tilt fluid comes spraying out the hole where the manual relief valve is on the mount. What will it take to fix this?
I am getting tired of replacing part after part on this motor. All i want to do is go offshore fishing one time this year in my boat. (this boat hasn't been offshore since i bought it back in February, its made one trip inshore fishing and a run around the bay a month ago.) If i can make one trip offshore in it, the motor can blow to hell and back and i wont care. I plan to buy a newer motor this winter. Sorry about the ranting everyone this motor has been one headache after another since i bought my boat back. |
Update: After looking at an exploded diagram i found out there is an o-ring around the valve. I took the keeper out and unscrewed the valve and sure enough the o-ring is missing a 3/8" chunk. Going to o'reillys now to get an o-ring. :sun: Or do i need to use "marine" o-rings? :you:

One word for you, LUCKY!
I still have a Merc trim unit on the workbench. I have all the parts, but need to make a tool to take the caps off the cylinders to freshen up the insides. I keep putting it off. I know it just goes on the shelf when done. Need to boat more and work on it less |
Ridge Runner how about a wrench used to change blades on a side grinder? It may work. Hell it ought to be pretty close.

The manager at O'Reillys gave me an o-ring. I put it on and screwed the valve into the housing, had to give it a good push to start the threads, and filled it the reservoir with tilt/trim fluid. I hit the t/t-button one time and it started leaking again. Unscrewed the valve again, and now i had TWO o-rings! I looked at my diagram online again, and yep, only one o-ring shown. :head: So i go and sit down with a beer to look at this mess for a while. After looking at the valve i discovered the o-ring O'Reillys gave me was too thick. When i screwed the valve into the housing a sharp edge at the bevel had cut the o-ring into two pieces!
Destroyer, i will take one of those super deluxe, extra tough, extra special synthetic hypalon marine o-rings. :you: Pic below of the o-ring o'reillys gave me on the valve. Tomorrow i will pick one up at the dealer. |

I'm sorry sir, we just sold out. I can order one for you. Should be here in about a month... The factory in China is on strike. Would you like me to put your name on the waiting list? :hide: |
