Re: Installing NFB Steering Helm
Okay, where was I... *Oh, yes, installing NFB... * ;D
I know it's been a while, but I've finally gotten around to trying to install this steering system. *I need some help boys. Skools hooked me up with what is shown in the previous pages of this thread. *I've installed what he sent as you will see below. *My questions and issues are in between the pics... http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...g/100_1640.jpg http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...g/100_1641.jpg http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...g/100_1642.jpg http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...g/100_1645.jpg Okay, what should I do about the helm cover covering the the bolts? *I can't get the helm cover flush because it lays over the bolts... *Should I try and sand or grind the plastic cover in those areas? *I think I need to shave the whole thing just a bit anyway because even though it's not a 45 degree helm, there is a slight angle to it... The other question I have has to do with whether or not there's enough space around the helm for it to function properly. *Here's what it looks like from the inside: http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...g/100_1644.jpg http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...g/100_1644.jpg http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...g/100_1646.jpg http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...g/100_1647.jpg I think I'll be able to get the cable to feed into the helm, but it's gonna be a bit tight and will likely end up touching the side of the console there in the pic. * I haven't been able to actually insert the cable into the helm yet because I lost the silly little key that goes onto the steering column to engage the steering wheel. *Anybody have an extra one of those little keys ??? *It's gonna cost me something like $10 to replace it because they only sell it with the steering wheel nut and washer. *Go figure *:-/ So, any help you guys have to offer will be greatly appreciated. * Sorry about the overload of info. *It's been a while *:) * |
Re: Installing NFB Steering Helm
Looks like its gonna work to me? What you are looking for is a "woodruff key" and if you knew the size could get at any good hardware store. I don't know the suze, sorry.

Re: Installing NFB Steering Helm
they sell the key's at Lowe's justtake the helm or thesteering wheel to Lowe's and look in the speciality area in nuts and bolts isle. should be about $0.30 maybe little less or more. i'd mark the bolt head locations with a marker and trim out a notch in the helm cover with a small curved hand file. sorry i missed trimming your cover >:( you should have enough room for the cable under there mine id as tight as yours in my 21

COOL!
Hey, thanks for the help guys. And I owe a very special thank you to Skools. Thanks brudda! |
Re: Installing NFB Steering Helm
i'm so glad to see it actually fit the old dash holes wow and it was made 9 hours away and it fit all but the cover didn't i send you a spare cover?

Re: Installing NFB Steering Helm
Perfect fit at that... I bored the holes outon the boat just a hair so that the bolts would grab hold firmly enough to run the nuts on the other side.
Also, yes, you sent me an extra cover. That's the one in the picture. It fits better than the other. At least I have an extra one in case I mess up :P |
Re: Installing NFB Steering Helm
BGA...where is the housing for the steerin' cable?...
|
Re: Installing NFB Steering Helm
Reel,
What you see in the pic is the end of the cable that goes into the helm. Once I finally get that "woodruff key" I'll be able to rotate the the helm and feed the cable into it. Once the end of the cable is fully fed into the helm, you'll see that the cable has a housing. Did I understand your question rightly? |
Re: Installing NFB Steering Helm
BGA here's what Reel is talking about the tube that goes on the out side of the steering box for the cable as it comes back out and you should pump a few pumps of good marine grease into your tube plus on your steering cable as it goesd into the box.
See the cable go by then a light color tube comes back from the box http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46...MVC-010S-2.jpg |
