His is a 95 with the single powerpack and 4 coils similar to the sytem that the V-4 90 degree loopers used. Sounds to me like a short in the timer base harness or a bad ground or connection on the coils since the port coils share the same plug for there source to the powerpack.

I had one display these exact symptoms and it was just a couple of the spark plugs were fouled.
