Re: water pump/lower unit

I'm having problems trying to get parts numbers. See if any of these guys can give some reasonable help.

The housing may not need replacing. I just do it on any motor that it's the first time working on it.

Thanks for trying!
I got the Customer service # for mercury (though I left it @ home ::) )
I am going to try and give them a call. Like I said today I am going to remove t he lower unit and hope that everything looks brand new ;D. I just bought the boat last August and had it serviced before I picked it up, so maybe they replaced everything? ??? ;D

Look at the tube adaptor to make sure it's not deformed from improper installation . The 75hp we just put a complete pump in had a damaged adaptor (this is a small pvc looking thing that is about the size of a 1/2" pvc coupling that goes from the water pump to the tube to the powerhead).

Re: water pump/lower unit

Well everything in the water pump looks brand new, but I replaced the impeller any ways.
Before I pulled the unit off I put it in reverse, neutral, and frwd to see how the prop spins so I have a reffrence later. In gear in would rotate in the correct direction with alitle preasure.
SO I put the engine in neutrral (thats what the book siad) and pulled it off. Everything went smoothly until I went to put it bavk on, it would go all the way up and stop about 1/2 inch from the top. After 1/2 hr of playing with everything it went up.
Put it in gear nothing prop spun freely ::)
Took it off, played with everything again about 10 min later put it on and it seemed to work.
when in neutral, the prop spins freely. But when in gear it is alott firmer then before in the correct rotation and is the same in the wrong rotaion.
I am going to go hook the hose up to her now and see what happens when I put it in gear.

Re: water pump/lower unit

Went in/out of frwd/rev alright so I think I should be allset.
The only thing that was wierd was, I did not put the electrolis plate back on yet and when I turned off the water it alott of water poored out of that hole. should the lower unit be filling with water?
It also started spitting water right away, no warm up time that is normal with merc/mariner.

In all honesty, you'll not be able to determine if you've gotten the dog out of time until you put it in the water and run it. Sounds like you done a reasonable job. I'll say good job if you don't have to adjust it out on the control cables or redo the dog sequense. Oh and if it pumps water the way you want, that adds points. ;D
