I put together some numbers for the 3 day trip. *Average RPM's does not include trolling which was 1400 - 1800 at 5 hrs per day. *It only includes what I tried to hold the stick at on the way to and from the fishing grounds: Boat/Motor: *1994 Wellcraft V-21 (21ft 4 inches) with 2004 Yamaha 150 2-stroke carbureted 25" shaft right hand rotation. Day 1 Seas: Flat Calm Fuel Burned: *44 gallons Miles Covered: *103 Average RPM's: *3700 MPG: 2.34 Day 2 Seas: Flat Calm Fuel Burned: *48 gallons Miles Covered: *102 Average RPM's: *4000 MPG: 2.13 Day 3 Seas: 2 - 3ft Fuel Burned: *50 gallons (Approx.) Miles Covered: 100 Average RPM's: 3100 MPG: 2.00 3-Day totals Total Fuel Burned: *142 gallons Total Miles Covered: *305 Average MPG: 2.15 |
Re: Blue's Weekend Striper Trip
Thats a great report & some nice fish. The bite is really hot just south of me at the CBBT right now. Im planning on trying Saturday. The weather looks questionable but Im going to try anyway.
Those Kencrafts are nice boats. I had a 21.5 CC for 10 years that served me well. I just sold it this past summer. Got something a bit smaller (20 ft. Maritime Skiff) with a 4 stroke on it. I had a 200 Ocean Runner on my Challenger that ran great but liked its gas. Great riding boat though. |
Re: Blue's Weekend Striper Trip
Come on now Blue, your cheatin us carbed outboard guys. You burnt 10 gallons a day trolling minimum which really skews your numbers. Your probably getting better than 3 mpg running. I know what mine does becasue of the flow meter. Now that said, the new tech outboards will troll at less then 1gph, and thats where they really get us.

Re: Blue's Weekend Striper Trip
Thanks Shore-Power.
Slot, since I don't have a fuel flow meter I'm limited in my calculations. I can tell you I burned roughly a quarter of a tank after 45 miles of straight out running. Quarter tank is 15 gallons. 45 divided by 15 is 3, so I think you are right on there bro! On another note, those 1st 2 days when it was flat calm, we should have went tuna fishing. The guys we talked to that did go caught the mess out of em and went no further than 40 miles out. Said it was slick calm out there too. 8) Never caught a tuna on my boat :'( |
Re: Blue's Weekend Striper Trip
Yep, I'd have tried for a tuna. The giants are running around the area. They weighed one this week that went something like 825 after it was bled / gutted. Can you imagine ;D

Re: Blue's Weekend Striper Trip
No can't imagine my V-21 being pulled under by a fish ;D
I was talking YFT - you know, the kind that you can actually catch on something smaller than a 130. The fish were running 30 - 40 lbs. BFT would be fun though. I'd like to do it at least once in my life - on a charter boat. Blue |
Re: Blue's Weekend Striper Trip
A pic of some tuna caught on Dec. 16th, which was the last day we went striper fishing...looks like fun size.

OMG MY FIRST MATE JUST EMAILED ME. Reflecting upon my earlier writings, I've come to the conclusion that HE is right. I left out a few of the best details of the trip!
