Took a big bull moose today at 25 yards one shot with my Mathews and five steps later he's doing the O'l drunk dance and over he goes into 6"of chilly water. I took off three days at the end of bow season for moose and I get a 43" bull an hour into it my biggest to date. I also got luck last Sunday when I took my boy out grouse hunting we run into a red/brown colour phase black bear that's going to make a beautiful wall rug and pepperoni. I'll figure out my photo issue soon.

Man - you're going to need a diesel powered grinder for all the sausage and ground meat from all those critters. Great season, congrats.

Kendall got her first chance at a deer yesterday, it was a nice buck, but buck fever got the best of here and she missed. Had a great day regardless. She did get to dispatch a gotor

Tool kalum out last Sunday for a whitetail hunt. It was a beautiful foggy day down along the river see lots of does and fawns. As we came into another field we spotted three bucks feeding and sparing together. A short stock put us within two hundred yards. A double lung shot from the .243 put him down in under fifty yards there was a little ground shrinkage due to the fog but still a very respectable buck from around here.

scook 10-02-2017 02:46 PM

Happy kid and probably very good eating. Congratulations to Kalum and dad.

On of my coworkers killed a giant moose with his bow a few weeks ago. I thought I’d share it with you all as it is a truly impressive representation of a big bull moose and more so with archery tackle. It scores mid 190’s and has a 60” spread.

Holy cow, that’s some bull! It must have been a little tense for your coworker until he went down.

This was the smaller of 3 that were hanging together for weeks. He figured take the shot 'cause the others might already be hit by cars....

I think the only tension for him was that a five year quest to arrow a big bull moose was over. Norm is Alberta’s provincial archery champion the last few years running. He can consistently hit a target over 100 yards me not so much lol.

They are sweet. I had never shot one. Tried it. Took 3 shots and hit bulls eye 3 times at 30 paces.

It does my heart good to see you guys and your kids/grand kids getting started hunting and fishing. My dad did his best but it wasn’t much and I didn’t get my son going early - we’re working together now to correct that.

The poor guy planned a bow elk hunt and ended up on the couch, sick as a dog for his entire vacation and I’ve been laid up with the worst cold I can remember for a couple of weeks. But tonight we spent some time in the shop installing a new scope on my rifle. We’ve got a good one for his rifle as soon as he comes up with the right rings.

Hopefully this year or next, we’ll have something to post.

bradford 10-27-2017 07:50 PM

I dont hunt, but glad to see fathers and sons spending time together outdoors away from the usual bs that takes up space in peoples lives.

#2, and this is the old doe that busted me out a couple of times during archery and black powder season.

Nice deer got to take out the nosey one. I hate it when a doe busts me on an archery hunt. Finally talked my boy into using my 243 hopefully tomorrow he can get a deer.

my daughter and I continue to be involved with The Outdoor Dream Foundation. As many of you know, Kendall is a cancer survivor and was adopted by the ODF a couple years ago. We've participated in 5 hunts and one fishing tournament with them. Kendall has yet to take a deer, but she's got one gator under her belt so far. The ODF is having their annual fishing tournament in Georgetown SC on the 8th. Following the tournament, they are having the Low Country banquet and auction fundraiser that evening. We hope to get another deer hunt soon, meanwhile we've been invited to a Pronghorn hunt in Wyoming the week of October 10th. ODF is flying us both out and handling all our equipment for the hunt. I'll post up pictures when we get back( I have to open a hosting site since Photobucket went to crap). Meanwhile, be sure to check out The Outdoor Dream Foundation http://outdoordream.org/ . Check out their TV show on Sunday morning, who knows, we might make it on there.

And when I can post pictures, one of my good friends took a 10 point atypical last Monday evening, his first on his new property, he scored it at 169

spareparts 10-10-2018 07:10 PM

If the storm doesn't screw up our flights, we are flying out tomorrow morning heading for Wyoming. 90 degrees and humid here, 28 degrees and snowing there. Gonna be fun

flights got cancelled due to the storm:cry:

so we flew out to Cody Wyoming last Wednesday and were picked up by our host and driven to Meteetsee Wyoming for a white tail hunt. We stayed in a beautiful lodge overlooking a creek bed. Near the second day of hunting, Kendall got a 8 point buck. If i ever set up an account to post pictures, I'll get it up. Great big thanks to the Outdoor Dream Foundation

Almost that time again! Well here anyway. My son is 7 and wants to hunt this year. I am going to take him squirrel hunting and out for the mentored youth deer hunt. Plus he wants to start trapping.

After 5 years of trying and being shown up by my daughter, I finally got a deer last week. At 52 years old, my first deer was a 97 lb doe. It will taste good. Going again Sunday

Anyone excited for this season? I will be hunting in west virginia along with pa this season. Last year did a elk hunting trip to colorado. No elk but had fun and learned alot. I will be buying my 9 year old son a cross bow too.

Looking forward to duck season. That's the only hunting I do any more.

I never duck hunted. Looks like fun.

I moved to the Lowcountry 30+ years ago. Started hunting deer, dove, pheasant and duck. I really only took up duck hunting because I had a Lab and wanted to see what he would do, and he LOVED it. It's so cool to see good breeding and instincts kick in. Loss of land/habitat since then and I stopped hunting altogether until a friend hooked me up with a nice place to hunt ducks, so for the last several years we've hunted, some seasons great, some not so great. (And a friend gives me venison occasionally.)

Mornings in the duck blind: hardly any place I'd rather be. My old Browning A500 serves me well, none of those lightweight shotguns that the younger (and more serious) guys use. And duck can be mighty tasty.

oteps 09-07-2021 08:59 PM

Went to a 3d archery shoot this eve. Only saw 1 kid other than mine. All old guys. Used to be alot of kids shooting when i was young. Guess im an old guy. Wish people would get their kids out more. Most of the old guys stopped and talked to my son.
I guess its easy to turn on the tv, computer or smart phone and put your kid infront of it.
We will be going every tuesday till archery season starts.

Our SCDNR has a program called take one, make one. Not just kids, but anyone that wants to get involved in hunting. They do shooting classes, hunting classes. Have different groups get together(Veterans, women, kids, etc...) they also overlap with special hunting groups like Outdoor Dream foundation(my daughters thread is on here somewhere). If nothing else, it got me interested in hunting. My cousin is a SCDNR officer and now doing shotgun clinics with kids. Now if I could just get a decent lease within an hour of my house.

Been off the site for quite a while - password problems. It's good to be back and see that things are still percolating along with you all.

Went to eastern Oregon for a guided cow elk hunt and between my son, a friend and I, we got two nice cows. Would have had three, but my son's rifle wasn't shooting accurately, so he declined to take a 300+ yd shot - he made a 200 yd head shot to put one down that our friend had a round in. His rifle is going off to get a good stock fitted - hopefully that will fix the problem.

I haven't hunted big game for ages and was surprised at how different field shooting is from the range. I got down with my new bipod and found the grass completely blocking my shot - I've got some work to do to get prepared for the next trip.

Another surprise was how tender the meat is. Beef round steak is usually pretty tough, but the elk has been really tender. Not a lot of flavor, but a little garlic powder and other stuff takes care of that.
