Re: Check this out
Wood in a boat's construction is not necessarily a bad thing. When they're built correctly, I'd rather have a boat with a wooden substructure. Composite boat construction can be a very much overrated concept. It's an easy way out for boat mfg'rs to tout what the consumers want to hear these days. They build them cheaper and charge more money. Of course this is not true for all boats. There are quality boats being built of composite materials. But, it's my opinion that a boat with a wooden substructure and built correctly will give you a much better "ride" than some of the cheap crap produced these days. I want something that's going to slice the waves and not bounce and slap on top of them.
But, this is just my opinion. What do I know? |
Re: Check this out
Cb it's the way they are built as it usually is.
But if given two boats made by quality manufacturers and one is wood sub structure and one is composite I'm going for the later. Especially if you are talking the transom, or on a sail boat or large cruiser type boat that uses balsa core for the tops decks etc. if it is to be used in water and it is impervious to water and the contruction is just as good the answer is obvious in my mind anyhow |
Re: Check this out
I agree. And as I stated, it's not true for all boat builders. There are some quality boats being made with some nice composite materials. I'm just saying that the "non wood construction" sales point is very overrated in many cases.

Re: Check this out
CB, I agree totally. Wood is better suited than composite IF it's done correctly. There's a reason almost all of the top tier boats are still using wood...it's stronger. This all composite, "no wood, no rot" is for marketing.

Re: Check this out
I think the reason that they are still doing it the way they are is because thats the way they have always done it.
It's hard to change, and a buisness decision for a change could cost them money, plus they are back on the drawing board with something they have not tested. A lot of the great yacht builders in the sailing world had the same concerns but some have made the change and have been happily rewarded by the public for it. I think you will see it soon in our expensive sprt fishers too. |
Re: Check this out
I'm not sure I totally agree with you there willy.
