i used a pair of plyers and had the wifey use them in to open the channel while i followd with the new rope and a hammer and screwdriver.
My one word of advice is to leave extra when you get to the end, mine shrank up a couple of weeks after i replaced it and now there is a 2' gap where they meet at the stern :-/ |

Assumin' ya don't use cotton rope(ya reely don't wanna do that)...once you cut it, singe the ends w/a Bic lighter ... it'll keep the cut-ends from unravelin' ;) ...
