Re: 1988 V20 with 225 Honda
could it be timing?

Re: 1988 V20 with 225 Honda
Well I did not see what year your boat is??
But you say its 2820# ?? Dry weight from factory on a 1985 CC, is 1920# you are 900# over weight!! According to Loadrite trailers, there single axle bunk trailer is 675 to 700# depending on which one you get. trailer 700 + motor 610= 1310 + boat 1920 = 3230 + gas 360 = 3590 + mis 200 = 3790 + T top 130 = 3920 total weight 4820 - 3920 = 900# over what you should be?? Better check for a hold of dead mackrel!! :o |
Re: 1988 V20 with 225 Honda
Jackman, it does sound like you may have some extra weight there, but add T-Top, anchors, batteries and other rmisc. items can add up...
as for as your top-end, I'm conviced repropping will get more speed and allow your Honda to spin up to it's max RPM...did you ever get in touch w/ these guys??...they make props FOR honda and are very knowledgable about matchin' props to various rigs...they made mine and it's gettin' all there is from my motor...very happy w/ it ;) ;D http://www.ptprop.com/ click on ''need help?"... |
Re: 1988 V20 with 225 Honda
I call the prop place you suggested. Talked to Jeff. He told me I should go to a 15 or 14 pitch prop (same 14 1/4 diameter). He said that would get the RPMs up there, and put less of a strain on the motor. He said to stay with the 4 blade. Only problem is his props were $523 !!
Checked around the net and the closest prop I could come up with was a 14 3/4 X 15 - aluminum 4 blade prop for ~ $ 130. Not sure what to do. I do think the boat is too heavy (for some unknown reason) - if it were 900 lbs lighter, I'm sure the 17 pitch prop would be ok. ??? |
Re: 1988 V20 with 225 Honda
Simple math should tell you that you should not have to drop to a 15" pitch prop to solve your problem. If anything you should need a 21" or 23" pitch to avoid over reving. With a 15" pitch and a 5500rpm red line your max speed will be some where in the mid/low 30"s.
|
Re: 1988 V20 with 225 Honda
I suggest that you should test the boat out on a calm day with a light fuel load and just you onboard. This should give you an indication if your problem is weight sensitive. The first test you listed you were carrying 900lbs+ 360lb in passengers and 360+lb in fuel, on the second 600lbs+ plus & fuel. Running alone with a light fuel load you could be as much as 1000 lbs lighter! If this does not make a big differance in the speed/rpm than your problem is probably not a weight related one.

Re: 1988 V20 with 225 Honda
Thanks for all your comments.
The red line on my motor is 6200 rpm. WOT only gets me to 5300. The prop people tell me that I am bogging down the engine going at WOT and only getting 5300 rpm. After checking the web to see what props are available for my motor, I see very few props that have a pitch less than 17. Most are 17 to 21! Still think there is something wrong with the boat. |
Re: 1988 V20 with 225 Honda
I will take the boat out with just me and a little fuel. Will let you know what happens.
|
Re: 1988 V20 with 225 Honda
I have a 14 X 17 three blade prop on my 90 hp and can get 4800 rpms trimmed up. I think a 225 should need a larger prop than this.

Re: 1988 V20 with 225 Honda
Going to Denver for a week to visit my son and his family. Be back on the 8th. Will do some more testing on the V20 them.
Thanks for all your help. |

Re: 1988 V20 with 225 Honda
You would never have this problem with a light weight 2 stroker!!
WOW |
Re: 1988 V20 with 225 Honda
this may have been asked allready, but has the tach accuraccy been checked? I've taken brand news out of the box and they been off quite a bit, you'll need to hook up a shop tach and run the boat at WOT to check this

Re: 1988 V20 with 225 Honda
Good thought. Will try it when I get back.

Re: 1988 V20 with 225 Honda
I dont know any thing about 4 stroke performance or which one is the fastest but I got a friend who has an old very heavy 19 Mako with a high dollar 130 Honda on it and its VERY heavy and slow.He has a T Top etc and has had to add bennet trim tabs and plug his scuppers as its so *** heavy. With two guys its hard to get up to plane and does not want to hold very well as he is always on the throttle trying to keep it at 3800 or so .At full throttle it is a gas hog but very quiet running. He used to have a nimble little 140 johnson which ran out around 42 but I would doubt if he gets 31 or 32 out of the Honda..I dont think the older boats were designed for such heavy weights and it effects their speed and performance but I could be wrong...I dont think its a horsepower thing...Frank

Re: 1988 V20 with 225 Honda
Finally got out on a fresh water lake. I have not been filling up the gas tank, so I can see what she does with a lighter load. The tank is about 5/8 ths full. I had my dog Sasha (40 lbs.) and one friend (160) and me (215). We took off, and the boat was very sluggish - that was when I realized I forgot to put the plug in, and the boat was filling with water. Had to open her up all the way, and have my friend get up in the front of the boat. Turned the bilge on. After 5 minutes (or so) she finally plained out. We ran around for a while until the bilge stopped pumping out water. We got the plug in. After that, it was fun. Truning 5400 rpm and doing 45 mph. Tried to catch some crappies, but didn't have the right equipment on board. Wanted to go out to the gulf this weekend, but too rough.
Will report more when I get out again. Thanks for your comments. |
Re: 1988 V20 with 225 Honda
put a sign on a ring and hang on the steering wheel,
"PUT PLUG IN!!" you won't forget again!! After you get use to it get rid of sign. Glad you got out!! Sounds like she is perfect! |
Re: 1988 V20 with 225 Honda
Jackman, my Honda 150 spins up to 6000 on the tach and tops out at 42 mph on GPS...don't know if it's propped wrong or what, but you still got some numbers you're not gettin' yet :) ...
...and my bet is , ya won't soon be forgettin' the plug again ;) ... |
Re: 1988 V20 with 225 Honda
Well, I did it! Just got fed up with the whole deal. Bought another 1988 V20 with a 200 hp Mariner on it. The boat is in awesome condition - original decals, nice gel coat, no paint. I am taking the stuff off the Bone Crusher and putting it all on the new boat (Ttop, windlass, electronics etc). Just ordered a 2007 Evinrude E-TEC 200 hp motor for it. That engine weighs almost 200 lbs less than the Honda (427 vs 610). I'm psyched - will let you know how it goes. Also ordered 2 Optima 34 batteries for it. Going to install them in the center console.
Having the motor installed January 15th. Wish me luck. |
Re: 1988 V20 with 225 Honda
Congrats Jackman. Looks like we solved that problem ;D
Congrats again, Airslot |
Re: 1988 V20 with 225 Honda
DANG Jackman :o go ahead, Bro!!... we gotts ta have some pics of the new boat; SPECIALLY after the 200s hangin' on it...keep us posted ;) ...
...will this be ''Bone Crusher II"? ... 8) ... |
Re: 1988 V20 with 225 Honda
Well I think that was one way to fix it!!
But I think you could have made it easier for yourself with just repowering what you had? Any how, sounds like you going to be all set now!! Pictures!! Good Luck! |
Re: 1988 V20 with 225 Honda
Thanks for the encouragement guys. Know anyone that wants to buy the Bone Crusher (nice trailer too)? Think the new one will be the Bone Crusher II. Will post pix when I take some.
|
Re: 1988 V20 with 225 Honda
You might do better sellin' V20 and Honda as seperate deals...never did think they were a match... ;) ...
|
Re: 1988 V20 with 225 Honda
That's what I think I will do. Maybe sell the Crusher and the 200hp Mariner and trailer as one package, and the Honda 225 seperately.
|
Re: 1988 V20 with 225 Honda
Reel, that honda you have hanging off the back of your V looks like a sweat Match. I'll take her off your hands if need be. ;)

What area do you live in? thanks |

Re: 1988 V20 with 225 Honda
The marina called me and my boat is ready !!! I will pick it up Monday. They said it performs great. Can't wait to get it. Will send report as soon as I try it out.
|
Re: 1988 V20 with 225 Honda
Picked up my boat Monday. That 200 E-TEC looks great on the back. Still getting everything hooked up it - windlass, electronics, etc.
The marina people that installed the motor and tested it, said it performs really great - said it planes out in 2 seconds !! wow. Should have it ready to go by Monday. The gulf is still too rough, so I may have to take it to Lake Weir and test it. Will report when I do. |
Re: 1988 V20 with 225 Honda
Decided to name the new boat (you guessed it) Bone Crusher II.
|
Re: 1988 V20 with 225 Honda
I think you are the first and only member w/ an E-tec....we expect frequent , detailed, analytical performance updates [and pictures].....as RAP would say," you goin' for dawg of the month". Good luck w/ the new power, whats up w/ the Honda or Mariner?
|
Re: 1988 V20 with 225 Honda
I plan to have her on the water Monday.
No bites on either motor yet - probably isn't the best time of year to sell a motor. The St Pete marina has the Mariner - they removed it from BC II when they installed the E-TEC - they are going to try and sell it for me. The Honda is still on the original Bone Crusher. Will send pix and performance info soon. |
Re: 1988 V20 with 225 Honda
Jackman...you may be DAWG of the Month !! ... can't wait to hear about performance #s 8) ...
...didja get small-block 200 or the big HO block ?... |
Re: 1988 V20 with 225 Honda
Got the small block V60 - weighed almost 100# less that the big block.
