Willy: I'm Glad you made it but I have to tell ya its hard to forget the horrible things that you see in police work so be prepared for bad dreams on down the line...I was a G-Man and retired in 2003 with 33years at mandatory 57 . I miss the excitement of big drug strike forces etc but the family trade offs , police funerals , murdered informants and witnesses , ******* US Attorneys and pathetic sentencing judges takes their toll..You will always wonder if you could of done it better but I think its just the business ..On a happier note I saw on TV where a guy serving 22 years for Federal jury tampering and killing a mob witness just got his law degree in prison courtesy of the US tax payers....Frank

Re: COPS

Thanks guys, and Phes I actually work in Scotch Plains and live in Whitehouse Sta.. Moved out there 20 years ago.
We get 65% @ 25 years completed, and 1% for each year after that to a max of 70% @ 30 years. Full medical as long as you don't get picked up with medical in another job.
It is a good system, but we pay for it big time along the way, the contributions per pay period are steep.
Never the less I am leaving with 28 years done 68% of my salary and medical and I wont be 52 until march 10th. So I am not complaining at all. My two brothers are contractors so I know I know I hear it all the time what are you off again 4 days on 4 days off what the h@ll kind of work week is that etc etc.
One day many years ago I went to a 911 call with some one screaming on the phone in the back ground, I pulled up lights out and parked a couple houses down the street. Walked up on the house and heard a crash of some kind. Called it in send some help something going on went to the back of the house found the homeowner lying on the ground outside a sliding glass door and the wife screaming upstairs, he was OK, he confronted a burglar and tried to stop him leaving, the guy used the homeowner as a battering ram and smashed out the door with him and took off into the woods behind the home. He described him as a big black guy dressed all in black.
I arrived just a few seconds after he fled so I gave chase in the direction he said. Pitch black night, heard him running way ahead inthe woods. Other uniits were driving around the surrounding streets but the areas woods were about 60 acres total. Played cat and mouse with that son of a B!tch for one and a half hours. I was cut up, scratched up uniform ripped and had stepped in every hole that God ever created. My flashlight battery had died after about half an hour and I was now on full night vision.
Eventually I got to a point where other officers had the area blocked off and I had just heard the guy a few minutes before breaking some sticks.
I found him, he was big, he was black and he was pissed. I think I hit that guy 30-40 times and had no effect on him and it got bad because he decided he wanted my gun and he was a lot stronger than I was. But I was the Cop, I don't lose, and I just got nastier, stuck a stick into his mouth so he started gagging and used it as a pry tool and swung him around and grabbed his privates and squeezed harder than I ever squeezed anything. He blacked out, I was more scared cause I thought I killed him , here he was with a hunk of rotten wood in his throat. But I cleared his airway AFTER I CUFFED HIM and he was breathing. Started screaming into the radio for all the dead a$$ senior officers who were driving around waiting for the suspect to walk up and shake their hand and introduce himself. Took a while to get him out but we did.
Went home after all the freaking paper work and it was now 0800 hrs and my electrician brother is leaving and he says, well you slept all night and now I guess you are going to sleep all day huh
One thing though, went back the next day to see the victim, he apparently was some type of stock broker and made decent money, looked at me and said there is not enough money in the entire world they could pay to do what you did last night. Shook my hand and said thanks.

Willy man, nothing but happy for you. I know a few in your shoes. Get out and enjoy yourself. Most that I know have moved a little south to a small town and eventually gotten back into the field working parttime, dispatch and stuff. Whatever you do you got to stay active and keep the old noodle working. Make the best of every day. I've seen way too many times what happens to a guy that retires to nothing. You don't want to go there...

Re: COPS

Oh don't worry Air, retirement is a misnomer.
I am just taking my pension, I got one in college and three coming behind him so it will be several years before I can become a full time sportsman.
Started looking for a job a couple of weeks ago. I gotta earn and the only way it really pays off for me is if I get a decent paying job.
Maybe the Grand Puhbah will hire me on as a mate ;D

Hey Willy, I'm about 3/4's pissed at my current proffession. Been thinking of looking for something to do my self. Ain't many guy's I would trust with my back like I trust you. If I ever pull it off your hired!

Re: COPS

Let me know brother, I remember a nice little bait shop down there right near the launch. Maybe we can have Blue come down there and make him one of his offers he can't refuse and take it over.
I would have to convince the CEO but who knows maybe if I show her that pic of you I got it will fly ;D

Re: COPS

Guys, my best friend owns a tackle shop. Looks great from where we are, but I don't want any part of it. If you love fishing or boating, those are two fields you can't really work in. You'll wind up working during the best times. Time to think of plan B. Thinking about plan B, I oughta become an insurance agent. They are always on the golf course or the boat... ;D

Re: COPS

Willy,

Great story!! I can tell that is one of those that you remember like it happened last night. Those are the ones to hang onto.

Here's an idea for your next job, write down those 28 years worth of stories and sell em. People love a good cop story.

Sounds like a pretty good retirement. We get the state retirement and a local suppliment. The suppliment lasts from retirement until you turn 62. Them you can start drawing your 401k. I don't know the percentages cause I'm not close enough to bother with it yet.

COPS DON'T GET PAID FOR WHAT THEY DO, THEY GET PAID FOR WHAT THEY ARE WILLING TO DO.

Re: COPS

You'll do alright Randle, there are other fellows on the job that are on this site.I have PM'd with a couple, they don't post much. Generally I had a pretty average career for the time period I came up.
Some guys here on the site have had some real bad experiences that have bothered them physically and mentally and I wish all the best to them, however their retirement works out.
And Air I hear you on the working the sport you love thing, been there, seen it ,done it.
Diffrence is in Fla, got a long long season number one. Number two if you do it with a decent partner you split the time and make it work.
There is a lot to be said for making a living with something you love. Plus generally speaking no one shoots or stabs you at the bait shop ;)

chumbucket 01-18-2007 03:24 PM

Re: COPS

willy. I wish you the best of luck in whatever you decide bro. I could be persuaded to make a move. Then we could split the shop time even more. ;) 8)

My wife would move right now if I would let us. She wants to move to the beach bad.

What about a tour boat slash sightseeing deal. That seems like it would be profitable. Slap a couple of four strokes on a double decker pontoon boat and go!

Hey, here's another good hussle. My brother-in-law works at a plumbing supply company and helps a guy on the side installing custom shower doors. He put it to me this way - how much do you think a fellow would pay to for a shower door? Get this - $1,500 to $25,000!!

They live in Wilmington NC and there's a plenty of ritsy seaside development going on to keep them busy.

I was amazed but it just figures.

Re: COPS

I'll tell ya, got to stop talking about this. Took a quick siesta this afternoon on the couch and had a dream I had MJ's favorite truck, my super duty, heading south V20 in tow and CB playing some Jimmy Buffet on the CD. A couple of hitch hiking college girls on spring break on our laps and the Wind Talker running behind us dressed in leather yelling" CB don't go". Stinky in the truck bed dressed in flourescent pink thong shooting at him with a hand cannon.
I got to lay off the Jack. Just wine for the rest of the week ;D

How many days left Willy?

willy 01-19-2007 01:20 PM

Re: COPS

Seven starting tonight, 5pm to 4am, then three days of 9pm to 8am off for four and then the last three 9pm to 8am.
Weird, started my career working those stupid midnights and a rotating shift and now after 15 years of 5pm to 4am's I'm finishing it with the same midnights due to both my Sgt.'s being away.
Ah what the h@ll. Spent almost my entire adult life putting the sun to sleep at night and watching it rise in the morning. It's a good thing ;)

You are just a couple weeks away from being a normal person again.

People who don't work nights like that don't realize how hard it is on you.

Counting down the days with you brother.

if you come to get that boat does that mean I have to have donuts in the house and if so what kind; powder, choc, cream filled??
Do cops have preferences because of location??

I'll ask some of the locals cops here and have that type for you to try!!!
