You don't wanna hear this, but, MOVE IT NOW. Y'all have done a great job...finish it right. ;)

Re: Robalo full transom
Slot, thas what Im afraid of...here is what I meant.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...an/bracket.jpg You with me now?....should be 27" |
Re: Robalo full transom
I'm with you all the way. I assume you used 4200 or 5200 on it? The longer you wait the harder its going to be to fix? Plus your gonna have the power head sitting five inches low on a bracketed boat. That ain;t good either... :(
|
Re: Robalo full transom
Yeah its got 5200 on it. Taking it back off today aint even an option. Its fixing to storm like hell and Ive promised my wife a date today. Shell be home any minute and Ive gotta get off this puter or Im in deep hooey. ::)
Im backtraking right now on the board trying to find where I posted for help on this and someone gave me the plans from a site. Cant find it......gonna look some more. But yeah, Im about 900% sure its got to be moved. :-X Im just pizzed cause I cant figure out where I went wrong. I specifically remember measuring over and over and over before we took the bracket down. I was fully expecting the tape to read 27+ a little while ago....I dont get it....Im stressed.... :-[ |
Re: Robalo full transom
Man, that's a serious bummer!
I thought the predrilled holes on the transom looked really low, but I didn't want to say anything... I agree with Air, you may want to have your buddy at least loosen all the bolts. The longer that 5200 has to cure, the more of a job it will be. Anyway, I sure hope everything works out for you and your buddy. |
Re: Robalo full transom
Stinky,
Is that bracket level? It may be an optical illusion, but it looks as though the holes were a little off and now the bracket looks like it's off too... Like I said, could be the way I'm looking at it. Anyway, you guys have been doing quite a bit of good work. Don't let this get you down; it's really not too big a deal; "just a minor flesh wound..." ;) |
Re: Robalo full transom
BG, thanks....
It is an illusion I believe....we measured it center and level so and looking at it in person it looked great. Of course I measured the height too and we see how well that went.... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...milies/bgh.gif |
Re: Robalo full transom
WOW :o Thats HUGE!!
Its simple, you forgot the lip!! Lip is 3" and thats what your missing. Like you I mesured 20 times and in the end I amost drilled it wrong till a friend said thats 22" ?? I said no darn way!! But it was?? Any who if you going to use the formula you have to go 25 + 1 for every 12 set back. I just did the 25 and so far have been fine. Better now then later so good luck! :'( |
Re: Robalo full transom
Stinky,
Never mind about my previous comment. I think the reflection on the transom was throwing my eyes off. I'm sure all is straight and level. Keep it going buddy, don't give up. |
Re: Robalo full transom
Stink, Sense you are going to have to raise the bracket anyway this gives you a chance to rethink the height. I would suggest that you go less than the 1" rise per foot of set back. With a lighter hull weight the rise/setback ratio is less. I would probably go with 26". It would be a real pain if the motor was mounted 1 or 2 inches too high but if it were just a little low you could adjust up with the engines mounting bolts.

Re: Robalo full transom
Ok guys...we MOVED IT!!! ;D
We put it in the water this morning with the bracket on it and things DIDN'T look good. :o The swim platform was right AT water level in a calm river. ::) So....we pulled it across town to my place, snatched the motor, snatched the bracket, remeasured, marked, filled, drilled, faired, and repainted it in record time!! As I sit here she is nestled under cover drying right now. The new height put the lip the outboard rests on at a nice 27.25" high. I settled on this height after I spoke with Skools earlier and he stopped to check a couple boats in the boatyard he was in. Why was he in a boatyard when he has a yard full of boats at home? I don't know, I guess because he is a boat *****!! ;D I also took this opportunity to drop several of the 27 bolts holding her on. Now there are less bolts, but they are going to be spaced out nicely so things will be more easily sealed. Thanks for all the imput guys....I just certainly didn't want to move that thing when I was for SURE we had just finished. I am glad it is done now though!!! BTW, that new transom, white powder coated bracket, and freshly painted Merc Opti look GOOD together! Even if it is a black anchor! ;D I will post pics when all is finished....hopefully we will hang it all tomorrow! 8) |
Re: Robalo full transom
Good job SH, I always like to do any job at least twice, that way you get good at it. 8)
|
Re: Robalo full transom
nice work!...snap up some pics with that motor on!
|
Re: Robalo full transom
STINK, sorry for the problems, but glad you gotter done right. Good Job Bro. ;)
Now snap us a few pix of te completed project. Your Fand are waiting. ;D |
Re: Robalo full transom
Hey Stink, Question for you or anyone else. I know by having the bracket to low it effects the motor and all, but does it also effect the boat when getting on plain ??? The reason I ask is, If i dont go with a bracket, I thought about going with a much wider swim platform. Instead of te basic 18 swim step, I wanna go like 30" wide, but know when teh boat gets up on plain, the swim platform will be in the water. Will this cause steering problems, having the platform in the water ?
|
Re: Robalo full transom
Hmmer, I would think that the platform would be in the water only at low speeds. Once on plane, even the bigger one would be outta da waddah.
|
Re: Robalo full transom
A job well done.
Question: Has anyone else used Durabak paint? If yes, tell us about it. What is your openion on using it above the rub rail. Wounder how it would work as a keel guard. |
Re: Robalo full transom
I got the idea from MJ.....MJ, where u at man? ;D
|
Re: Robalo full transom
Was actually gonna post a pic. once before on a guy who used that paint as a keel guard. If the boat stays trailered, should be ok I guess.
|
Re: Robalo full transom
I am here!! ;)
So I said 27 and was off 1/4 inch ;D I have had the paint for a while, but because of motor issues I have not used the boat much. I can tell you this, it did not like being painted on the trailer fender, from twisting your foot it has peeled off. In the rear of the boat I have some hinged doors, and one is touching the floor and has wore thur the paint, I am going to trim the door a hair to stop this. You are never going to slip on the non slip!! as a matter fact I think its a bit to much! I am hoping that the sharpness of it will ware down after a little while. |
Re: Robalo full transom
Woohoooo!! We finished her up today!!! At least my part is finished anyways. He took it home to hook the motor up and put on some hardware and such. He is going to let all the 5200 set up for a few days and run it then. Maybe, if all goes right we will be fishing the snapper opener this weekend in it. If not we will use my boat.
Here are some pics. Controls and all not hooked up yet. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...an/boat061.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...an/boat065.jpg Here is an inside shot. We replaced some teak with starboard. The bottom is the really roomy 30 ish gallon live well. The bilge area isn't quite finished up, we temporarily painted it with some urethane until he gets some more Durabak in for touch ups. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...an/boat067.jpg ...and yes the inside plate is off a bit, its because the right "wing" on the bracket has a little bend downward. You can see it in the second pic. It was that way all along and Im not gonna try and bend stainless. :o No worries, it works just the same. 8) Im glad its done. My poor boat if feeling lonely. ;D |
Re: Robalo full transom
Nice work Stink.
Who is going to see the inside plate anyway. |
Re: Robalo full transom
Looks much better now! I thougt it was low before.
Great work!! |
Re: Robalo full transom
Looks great!!! Lots of room to fish in that boat! I thinks coaming pads would look and perform great in there. Great job! 8)

Re: Robalo full transom
We ran the boat today folks and things went GREAT! We put in at Rabbit Creek and ran out to the bay and across it a couple miles before we came back in. I had to run so we couldn't stay too long.
She planed out great, ran faster and had a smoother ride as well. Not to mention reduced engine noise! Its definitely the quietest two stroke Ive ever been on. :) * Before the top speed was 37 GPS and today we got it to 42 trimmed out. Everything is the same...GPS, motor, prop, RPMs, etc... 8) We had no leaks and the bracket stayed dry inside. Even with the big live well in the floor full the motor and bracket height looked great from idling all the way to full speed and back again. http://www.forumpictureprocessor.com...041807_002.jpg http://www.forumpictureprocessor.com...1807_003_1.jpg Here is my friend's little boy, Johnny. He likes the new cockpit room. * ;D http://www.forumpictureprocessor.com...041807_004.jpg I was really amazed at how effortlessly the boat lopes along at 35-38 MPH. It doesn't sound like the big Merc is working hard at all. Its really sweet! I am ready to get her out in the Gulf this weekend for sure and put some miles on it so we can check fuel efficiency. * 8) |
Re: Robalo full transom
That's pretty consistant with what I saw on the Ship Shape TV and the tests that they ran. Pretty work. Stinky, that merc looks a lot better on the bracket than you and your panties ;D.
|
Re: Robalo full transom
Great Pics. STINKY. Again, great job on the work you did. ;)

Re: Robalo full transom
