Re: FLUKE.

i'll tell ya why go for 17.5.
last season our limit was 18 and 4 fish.
i didnt fish my limit once.
i cant tell you how many 17.5 fish i threw back. it would have been nice to bring home 5-8 pounds of fillets.
i have been fluke fishing since the late 60's.
we used to catch 5-8 pounders all day long.
now thats a trophy.
the problem with our coastal waters now is that any schmuck with 5 grand can buy a boat.
used to go out on a perfect summer sunday and there were maybe 10 boats out there.
now i only fish during the week because the entire ***ish fleet and the italian navy are all out on the weekend.
i fish thursday and friday and there are hundreds of "captains" out there who have not a clue what they are doing.
its almost impossible to enjoy boating anymore.

ok, now i'm done.

I hear you Charlie. I clammed my way through college and would almost end up in a fistfight everytime I would go out on a Sat. It's just not worth it. Too many people who think it's just like driving a car and are clueless as to proper ramp and boating etiquette.

Re: FLUKE.

Yea so that it is clear, there is a diffrence in flounder and fluke. Flounder are in the deep water ocean drop offs all summer, we fish for flounder(winter flounder) until May 19th this year here. After that the inshore fishery is for fluke.
Flounder is what I believe the southern boys go after and it is what we call winter flounder and it is a right side fish. The summer version we get hear is called fluke and it is a left side fish that migrate in to shallower inshore locations during the summer months. Usually a much bigger fish especially later in the season.
At least that is my understanding ;)

Re: FLUKE.

Did somebody say Flounder? ;) A summer flounder is also known as a Fluke, winters offshore and migrates inshore during the season. These fish tend to migrate straight inshore / offshore, and maybe slightly north as they grow.

Winter flounder are a differnt sub-species, are opposite eyed, and don't grow nearly as large as summer flounder. Winter flounder range as far south as VA (barely) but are most common from NJ north.

Southern Flounder are found from NC and south. They are found in the shallow coastal bays in the Carolina's and south. The Carolina's see some summer founder, but generally outside the surf line and not in the coastal bays. Southern Flounder are also found in the land of Stinky-Hooker.

That's my knowledge of flounder / fluke / winter and southern flounder. I don't know much of the yellowtail flounder, but will make it a point to learn.

careful cct, I don't know what the fine is for keeping a short, but it's alot more than 65.00. It's just a giant sh!t sandwich and we all have to take a bite :-/

Charlie,

I'm with ya. Just talking with my buddy about that this morning as we are catching a bunch of schoolie bass. i was thinking back at how much we spend to fish and how many we keep and it pisses me off. I gut hook a short its in my pal now on.

Let the regulators go after commercial guys and stay away from the common man. Commercial guys rape the sea and half of it spoils in the store.

Re: FLUKE.

hey phes i just read the article.
the only word i can think of to describe what i read is

UN****INGBELIEVEABLE!!!

these pieces of sh!t drag up 5,000 pound of fluke to keep 100 pounds.

you read that right.
five thousand pounds and their limit is one hundred pounds.

they then proceed to discard 4,900 pounds of dead fluke not to mention other species as bycatch.

i'm speechless. (not really but you know what i mean).
