I made a run down to the shore @ around 75mph. Distance of around 45 miles... Then I got there and got it off the trailer. Does that count?:hide:

But it was fast as Hell----My hair hurt from the wind burn:you: Would not want to go anywhere near that fast in my V-20---even on the trailer---LOL |

My V21 with current 150 hp Evinrude looper runs approx. 41 mph light with top down.
Off a cliff........... as I wrote, tough to call but with enough space, maybe over 100. |
Lets talk practical outboards on a bracket that can hit 60. So far we have the 250XS. .
|
Finally! Giant displacement car motors with a wicked case of the hops don't count. :time::sun:
|
I saw 77 on the GPS in my buddies Skeeter Bass Boat w/a 225 V Max...that was on day 1...motor's run in now and she's toppin 80...
|
I guess with the 135hp im putting on mine i should start a 30 mph club!!!:sun:
|
Problem is ...........the V's only rated up to 200hp.
So, I suppose you have to be an " outlaw" to run with more hp. The most powerful 200 outboards are the etec HO and the Merc Optimax, both producing well over 200 actual hp at the prop. Genie Ayer's boat with the etec HO I believe he said runs about 52 mph WOT. Now as for inboards..........who would know how much hp ? I'd really like to see more video of the V that was running about 70mph........was porpoising a bit, but I bet tabs would fix that issue. |
What about a hopped up 280hp 2.5L Merc? Leave the 200 Cowling on and nobody would ever know. The V20 my trim tabscame from had a worked on Merc 2.5 and was running 55.

How fast is too fast for this hull ?
Since we've seen the video of guy running over 70mph, and just porpoising a bit.....I'm thinking maybe 80 or so........before even straight line flat water running become's truly " iffy." At some point the hull might even go airborne, then tumble, spin, break up, and that's it. Yup, this is contender for the most rediculous posting on the site. |
I think 80 is doable. I know we could hit it in the v20, but 70 is plenty in this boat. Plus, not very often it can be opend up. BUT, it gets great milage:sun:

If we can get some smooth water there, and get it opened up, I will take more videos of it for you. It runs a Bravo 1 24 pitch 4 blade prop. If your on lake erie, and see a mid 80's v20 with a yellow outdrive on it.....beware :) http://www.wellcraftv20.com/communit...&pictureid=595 |
Look for this guy.....probally one of the happiest V20 owners on earth:sun:
http://www.wellcraftv20.com/communit...&pictureid=576 And he rants and raves how good the economy is on it.....turns very little rpm to cruise mid 20s with. And, that was really the point of the build, to save gas...... |

Anyway, sure if you can get more video, fantastic - show the rear wake so we can get an idea of speed, and from a dock with the boat going by WOT if possible. Did you put tabs on it to cut the porpoising ? |
Rarely is it ever flat enough to run that fast at Erie. It has had trim tabs, but now they work .....LOL I have a video of the wake, will need to dig it up. I have none from shore :( but, if I get the chance, i will shoot a HD video form the dock.

|
What was the approx speed during that video ? Looks fast but hard to estimate....
|
That was around mid 60's. IIRC, right at 65 or 66mph.
|
60 i was so happy to get 35 out of my steplift
|
Ya'll got balls. I'd be scared of stuffing the bow at those speeds in any kind of seas.

Good point
I recently helped pull a man out of the drink for excessive speed malfunction ie. 18' /90 mph rig doing fly-bys took flight off a boat wake. Thankfully nobody was injured. I think he got complacent and forgot where he was for a moment, it only takes a second.
Conditions on lakes, rivers and near shore allow speed on ocassion but it is still inherently dangerous. A simple boat wake becomes a hazard with more speed. IDK about 70 or 75mph in a V-20, huge pucker factor. That much speed requires a lot of boat out of water. Would it fly straight when you do get it aired out? We may never know.. Anything over 50 needs to be approached with utmost respect, always. Wear the vest, attach the kill switch lanyard and have some boats there in case Mother Wellcraft decides you need a bath. |
