Very nice LS but my son is paying for this so it will be the basics. Soaking tub tile in the tub alcove and tile floor. I'm heading over there now I'll post pictures of the floor later tonight. Billy Mac

OK I'm sorry I forgot to take the camera with me. The floor has large gaps between the 1 bys so we're going to put down either 1/4" luan or 1/2' plywood. Then the thinset and then the backer board. Is the thinset used under the backer board the same as the stuff we'll be using for the tile? What should I use the 1/4 ' or 1/2" stuff? Thanks Billy Mac

Yep, it's the same stuff you use for laying the tile.

I'd recommend using wonderboard... As for how thick to go on the plywood or wonderboard, that all depends on how high you need to go. Usually 1/4" is all you need, but that's with an existing subfloor in place.

That said, I'd wait to hear back from Lumber to know for sure...

BGA is rite the thickness of the hardie backer and plywood plus the thickness of the tile depends on how high the existing floors are in the house and what your trying to
match up to

Are you planning on useing a marble threshold or metal edge or wood transition strip in the door way?

Mac_Attack 03-31-2008 08:18 PM

The rest of the house has hardwood floors 3/4". We are planning on using a marble threshhold. I have not looked into the threshhold yet, give me some ideas please? Thanks Billy Mac

the marble threshold is good !!

I have not got the experience of the pros on this site but I would recommend skipping the nails on the sub floor and instead use screws before using the thin set on top and then the wonderboard or equivalent.
Good luck Willy
