check the calibration switch on the back of the tach, they get a little off from time to time, look at what position its in now, rotate teh switch one way, tehn the other, then put it back where you started, if that doesn't work, change the position of the switch while the engine is running, if it doesn't get any better, then its most certainly broke

If you haven't made any changes or repairs prior to the tach acting up, most likely it's just the tach. However if some work has been done in the control box, motor compartment or instrument panel (even changing a bulb), this opens another can of worms. Yes the calibration dial is a very likely culprit.
