I have or should say Had, the same set up. The rod rotted like yours
I saved the cleat and reused it, but there is no rod going to the bow eye any longer.
I knew a guy that lost his boat off the trailer cause the bow eye failed!!
Ever since I now have transom straps, I never did for years!! But now I won't leave home with out them!!

As a matter of fact, this is something willy mentioned to me that needed to be fixed on O.S. A very timely post for me. Check it out. I have no rod as there is no lift ring (pulpit is there) but it looks like there used to be one. Problem is I have nobody to make me a new piece like your dad did!

Ken, I don't think you need to have the bar there if the deck is firm. You can just have a plate made to replace whats there, that way you don't yank the bow eye out.

Unless you going to be lifting the boat you're not going to need the rod.
I reused my cleat with a backing plate

You will also want to check the condition of the block of wood under the plate. If has rotted out you will want to replace it.

Re: Bow eye repair (inside)

if you dont need to lift her by the eye (bottom paint), then just take her apart, get your self a new piece of metal (metal shop...local) or maybe even a good piece of plywood and wrap her in fiberglass. then re-glass her to the hull. drill holes. and get a new bow eye.

But........be careful loading her on the trailer till you fix her, you dont want that bow eye coming out of the front of the hull. :o
