Re: Transom Modification

best plan cut just the wood out from the inside as much as you can replace with a 1 piece plywood replacement and glass in 2 new 3/4 plywood pieces.

Re: Transom Modification

Yeah, I can't imagine there would be any adaptors available and any homemade ones would require more work than replacing the transom. Don't be tempted to bolt a panel to the transom instead of replacing it. Have seen this done several ways and each one has ended up in the landfill.

I was just reading this post and realized no one told him
to make sure that his cuts are made using a 45 or 30 degree chamfer. The wide cut on the outside and the narrow on the inside.

Re: Transom Modification

If it were mine and I was dead set on installing a merc I/O , Id follow skools advice. Cut as much plywood out from the inside to the outer skin. Leave the outer skin in tact. A 4an a half grinder works well with a 60 grit flapper sanding wheel. Grind all wood and glass out of the area to be refitted. Cut a template out of cardboard to fit that spot. Trace pattern onto marine ply,cut ply, sand to fit. Glass all back in, with resin and glass.

Re: Transom Modification

believe it or not Volvo used to offer an adaptor to install an sx type drive(same bolt pattern as a merc) in the hole an AQ came out of, never seen on in person, just saw it in a catalog once, got to be expensive$$$$$$$$$
