Re: Evinrude Etec

I've watched that video many times and never noticed the guy at the very end that come in looking at E-tecs...he's covering his crotch!

Is it true that E-Tec oil cost $30/gallon?

Re: Evinrude Etec

These e-tecs are no tickle to the wallet either! I use this site as a gauge (usually pretty close to what most of us can expect to pay.... except for those who have "connections" :P ).
E-Tec

Yamaha
http://www.edsmarinesuperstore.com/yamaha.htm

The weight difference between the e-tec and yamaha (both hpdi and 4 stroke) seem minimal.

yami 4 stroke http://www.yamaha-motor.com/outboard.../63/specs.aspx

yami hpdi http://www.yamaha-motor.com/outboard...s/7/specs.aspx

Couple of points of interest:
1) The E-tec 150/175/200 all weigh the same (I'm assuming same block)
2) All the Yamis where heavier than the E-tec by about 40 lbs or more.
3) the yami 150 4 stroke was about the same weight as the yami 150 v-max hpdi.
4) while I don't know what the difference is between a yami that's labeled v-max hpdi vs on that's just labeled hpdi (the 200 HP comes in both) the 150 was only offered in the v-max flavor.
5) I'm assuming the E-Tec is meaning maintenance is cheaper, because the cost to get one is more of a shot to the Nortons than any of the comparable yamahas.... :-/

Just thought I'd share what my curiousity because of the thread lead me to find ;D

Oh yeah, I'm starting to like the E-Tecs more and more, but I still have a long way to go before I have to decide. I guess the first thing I should look into is some good Norton protection! :o ;D :o ;D

Re: Evinrude Etec

I am seriously thinking about repowering my V20. Although my 150 Yammy is still running OK, the Etec looks really good to me. The reason I like the Etec is that it is a 2-stroke. IMHO 4-strokes weigh too much and have too many moving parts and alot more regular maintenance. I can still remember a Nissan van that I had that blew a composition timing belt at 40,500 miles and the warranty expired at 36,000. The engine really went KABANG!!! You guessed it, I don't like 4-stroke non-metal timing belts. Nissan only fixed it after I spent very significant money on lawyer fees and alot of bad-mouthing!!!

The oil for an Etec is expensive but Jonnyrude says it uses alot less. I am trying to find out what the Etec oil really is. Maybe it is 100% synthetic?? When it comes to oil, there seems to be a generic equivalent to all of it. However, I think that for warranty reasons I would use the $30 oil!!! The Etec also gets high marks for clean running and it uses less gas. My local dealer sells both Yamaha and Jonnyrude and he has not had one Etec back for warranty repairs. (So he says!) I am not really that adventurous and I will wait until the jury is totally in on the Etec unless the Yammy goes bang unexpectedly!!

Well, sure. Why repower until you have to, unless you have $$$ to burn. Better the devil you know . . .

Re: Evinrude Etec

Well I agree with pipe!! if it isn't broke don't fix it!!

You may not be sold on four strokes, but I am not sold on ETec, way to much computeration (is that a word) They making them like cars now, you have to have a computer just to know if it is running right or not!
They making them so the back yard guy can no longer work on them!!

Nope I have a 89 Yamaha and as long as i can fix myself, get parts, I am going to run it!

Re: Evinrude Etec

I think that all of the new outboards are very computerized and don't think that we can get around that. I hope that my Yammie will last forever also, but I don't think that is likely!!!
