Re: Native American Artifacts I've Found
Petrified wood and three pieces of pottery. The most valuable piece is the one with the buffaloe on it.
The most ornate in the youngest piece. Note the charcoal on the inside, sometimes they filled with ash to temper. I'll look for the other pieces laying around the house. |
Re: Native American Artifacts I've Found
Thanks guys ;)
Tsub, I think the sites I hunt were pre-pottery. That's the only way I can explain why I haven't found any pottery. From what I understand pottery came about due to farming and they didn't learn how to farm until later on. In other words, when they mainly hunted, they didn't need a big bowl to put cooked meat in. But cornmeal on the other hand..... |

are those igneous? |
Re: Native American Artifacts I've Found
The black point in #8 looks like obsidian (volcanic glass). Most of the arrow heads I've seen from the left coast were flaked from it. Here's a thought... If your black points are obsidian, where did it come from? I'm not up to speed on east coast geology but I don't recall it being a volcanic area. I figure either it's not obsidian, my geological hunch is wrong, or those folks did a lot of trading back then.

Re: Native American Artifacts I've Found
Oh, this (believe it or not) is a typical artifact that we find.

Re: Native American Artifacts I've Found
And this is to show how serious they were about gathering food.

Re: Native American Artifacts I've Found
This is what most of the pottery looks like that I find pieces of.
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w...Picture004.jpg It's about 14"-16" tall. |
Re: Native American Artifacts I've Found
Awsome! I had no idea I could find that stuff here. Ever get to middle GA around Macon or Milledgeville? Arrow head would alwys pop up in the yard after a good rain.

Re: Native American Artifacts I've Found
That piece(s) is in the UGA Marine Institute on Skidaway Island. It's most likely impossible to find more than one or two pieces of matching pottery but there are millions of pieces of thousands of containers easy to find.
I have always been looking for arrowheads and have never found more than a 1/3 piece of one, that's how I ran across the pottery. I've found ancient oysters 12" long near Augusta and salt water shells near Warner Robbins. |
