No, the transom isn't plated. It's just painted white like the bottom of the hull. The boat with my old 2.0 MERC is plated though, but that hull is beyond rotted :o. The transom in the boat I got with the engine isn't wet or cracked anywhere, it just simply broke from engine torque. He said the transom was fine with his 2.0L, but he got the speed bug and hung the 2.5 EFI on it. You can see the transom went from engine torque from where it's flexing. I can either sell it like it is without an engine, plate the transom and hang my 2.0L on it, or cut just the middle out where it's cracking and replace the wood and plate it to reinforce and put my 2.0L on it and sell it. I personally I like option #1 myself, but I'm getting tired of working on boats. Option #2 is against my ethincs as I hate selling something knowing it's bad without disclosing it(I know, I'm to honest). And option #3 would be the best for somebody else as the boat is really in sound condition with the exception of the transom. The floor is solid and all of the electrical works, and it isn't all faded out like most 21 year old boats.

But first on the agenda is to get the MERC off of my PROLINE and get that EFI on there ;D.

Are you going to swap lower units to retain the low water pickup, which is reel handy with that jackplate?

DEFINATELY! I just have to re-seal my low water pick-up unit, has a few streaks in the fluid in it(but nothing major).

hey ferm, in all this swapping, i need a steering arm for a 95 merc/mariner. i realize your not tearing down an engine, but thought you might have one in your "inventory"

Don't have one at the moment, I may have one in the next couple of months though. I'm thinking of parting one of these MERCS out.
