true true but he didnt have his wife 13 yr old daughter and 17 yr old neice with him and a 4 ft round tube in his boat

That really stinks that they ended your day.......next time get the ext. without the gage, then superglue the indicator button so it cant go down.

rm ...it didnt end my day I went to boat shop got a new one and was back on the water in 20 min ;D

About 17 years ago my wife and I decided to take our 4 year old daughter on a camping trip to a nearby barrier island (Beach Hammock).
My father and his wife decided to do the same but they would sleep in their boat.
We had a 16’ trihull and Daddy had a 21’ Sunbird, so he suggested we put everything in his boat except the tent.
Needing to go to the store for something he suggested that we go ahead and they would catch us about the time we got anchored there. Well they never showed. We returned to the dock and checked the house, no one home, so we returned to the island thinking we had passed them. By now it’s sunset and low tide and I wasn’t willing to attempt a night run either across the sound or the back creeks with a 4 year old in the boat. So we anchored and covered up with the tent and used life jackets for pillows.
The coast guard had boarded his boat and after inspecting it found the port bow light was out, daddy got under the deck, wiggled the wire and the light worked. Well the commander then said “there is beer in the cooler, he must be intoxicated”, so they drove his boat to the dock of their choosing (after running it aground) to await the county police to do a breathalyzer test. While attempting to dock the coast guard rammed the boat twice on the float and daddy shoved the driver out the way and docked his own boat. The police did not have the equipment so they had to take him to a neighboring town.
During this we had passed them looking for them, their boat was hidden from view behind the dock and other boats. His wife could see us and asked the coastguard to alert us by way of the bullhorn. Their response was “that’s not our problem” as we passed trying to find them. Well about 30 minutes later we passed by again going back to the island, she pleaded the second time to please alert us, same response.
After 4 hours of being detained they were released. Well his wife demanded a report of these actions and received one which included the grounding, busting a floor hatch, ramming the dock and the fact he had to dock his own boat because personnel were incapable of it and it stated that daddy did not appear intoxicated at time of boarding.
By now the fog had set in. This is before GPS and cell phones and I didn’t have a VHF radio. Daddy tried to find the island but had to return home because of the fog and rough seas.
She sent letters (expecting apologies) to the coast guard with copies of the report and received no response. As far as local authorities having the jurisdiction that’s not the case, the coast guard can go where they please and do as they please.
