Re: Rough Day on the Bay

This has been the worst year I've had in the Bay. I did well early in the year for flounder but havent caught anything decent since the first week of July. I think this is going to be the first year in about 20 years of fishing that I havent caught a Weakfish. In the past couple of years I was complaining about the large number of Croakers now I'd be happy to catch a few.

Went out of the Maurice River (NJ) to the Dbay on Sunday. About 2 footers. Enough wind so that Greenhead flies had problems landing on you for a meal. Didn't do any fishing. I was checking electronics, particularly VHF. Also got boarded by the Coasties in the Maurice. Fortunately I have been known to wear suspenders and a belt at the same time. The CG was impressed that I had 2 of everything that only requires 1. All is well. I am gearing up for fall stripers and all of the boat stuff I am doing is related to fishing, particularly stripers. I have had a good year fishing and have caught at least 1 of everything including several nice weakies. Didn't catch one weakie last year!

I am hoping to make a couple of October November trips this year,
if all pans out.

I've got to share this with you guys, as I'm not at all familiar with Delaware --

Last night I got into a conversation with a neighbor, a gentleman of about 80+ years, and gradually the talk turned to boats. Well, I soon discovered that he used to have a place up around Indian River. He started with a 16' boat, soon learned that he needed something larger, and bought a brand new Grady White, a 20 or 21 footer -- this was back around 1960. His eyes sure did light up as he talked about going through the inlet and out to an offshore marker to fish, and going out farther to the canyon. He loved that boat, and spent many days and more than a few nights on it fishing with his wife (now deceased) and sons, and brought home a lot of flounder, among other things. I could see in his eyes and in his words that he could see all of these past scenes in his mind like it was only yesterday.

My point? These are the good old days, gentlemen.

I think I'm going to invite him out on the ol' PD. ;)

parishht,

Not retired yet. I have spent a few years fishin the Delaware Bay and have some spots that have produced well this year. Wife and I have been looking in DE. for a retirement property. DE looks good tax-wise and my wife doesn't want to be far from the grand children. I will still fish the bay if I live in DE, but the fishin spots I now use will be a pretty good run from DE. I will probably run to the Delaware side of the bay next year to discover some new fishin holes over there!

Geekie, There are a lot of spots on the De side,
here is a link I posted of structure sites:

http://www.dnrec.state.de.us/fw/2005reefguide.pdf

One of the locations is a wreck that MSBHAMMER has been looking for.

PD, Indian River Inlet is a dangerous place,
I avoid it at all costs.
Almost every year we will hear of a boat going down
trying to maneuver there.
The volume of water that flows during tides is incredible
and you should see the currents during tides.
A better place to go out is the Roosevelt inlet at Lewes, De.
The same fishing spots are accesible by about 15 minutes more.
Lewes has a really nice public ramp with lots of parking.

Been through the Indian River Inlet pleanty of times with teh big dive boats. It's not a place to be if ya dont know what ya doing. Huge swells and waves roll on through there.

Tho' I do enjoy a good sloshing....the St.Lucie Inlet can get pretty rough. I've seen waves stacked 6ft high and 20ft away from eachother. I've learned since to turn around and forget about goin' out on those days.
