Re: 1988 WELLCRAFT V20 STEPLIFT
Hey, I sure hope that was a good deal, b/c I bought it!!! ;) Was it a good deal? ???
Unfortunately, it will be a long trek to bring her home. I live in MD and the boat is in FL. I plan on towing it with my 2003 Jeep liberty with a class III hitch. Do you guys think I'll be okay? According to the owners manual the Libery is capable of towing up to 5000#, but I would never want to try it. Should I have a transmission cooler installed before making the trip? How do you think it will go with braking? I know there was a previous thread on towing, but I thought I'd ask anyway. I have a lot more questions about the V20. Please allow me to apologize up front for my ignorance in this post and any posts that follow. This is the third boat I have bought in about a year and a half. I'm hoping the third boat will be a charm. Steve |

Phatdaddy,
I'm still here. Just buying my time until it feels right. I owned a V-20 before and I think thats the direction I want to go again, but the dual console still intrigues me. Needless to say I can't make up my mind. You say the boat is still there? I wonder what he would take for it now? Maury |
Re: 1988 WELLCRAFT V20 STEPLIFT
The Jeep says it is rated for it, does it have a tow package, may already have a cooler on trans. How is the trailer and does it have brakes. Your trip is one I just took going even farther north, pretty flat terrain should be easy tow, keep speeds down, so what you get there an hour later. Check that trailer and if you don't know its been done get the bearings pulled, install new and grease. If it has brakes more the better. Tandem or single axle, either way got to have good rubber all around too, especially with single axle.
I wanted one of the other guys on this site to check that boat out, ideal set up for what he wanted to do, should serve you well, as far as price that depends on condition of hull, floors, stringers and especially the transom, along with engine. Conversation was had about how nice an sea drive is for converting to a bracket and outboard arrangement. Good luck to you, take your time and have a safe trip |
Re: 1988 WELLCRAFT V20 STEPLIFT
Hi Willy,
Thanks for the quick response. I'm sure the Liberty didn't come with the tow package; I had the hitch installed after buying it. Trailer is aluminum and is a tandem axle and no brakes. I will be sure to bring plenty of grease with me. Trailer has a spare as well. I'll take her slow. |
Re: 1988 WELLCRAFT V20 STEPLIFT
You should be good with a tandem, but you have a short wheel base vehicle and no trailer brakes, with the weight of that boat and trailer you will actually be illegal in a lot of states. So keep your speeds down, 60-65 max because your stopping distances are going to be long and keep a good follow distance, get home safe and fish hard ;)

Re: 1988 WELLCRAFT V20 STEPLIFT
Rated for 5000# A TRANNY COOLER IS A MUST ON ALL TOW TRUCKS!!!!!
It will be ok to get it home, but take it easy!! You are real close to the limt when you count boat motor and trailer. If you had all your gear and gas in it also you would be there. After you get it home, you will have to decide how far you have to tow on a regular basic. Before you get going, jack up the trailer and wiggle the tires to see that the berrins are tight and not grinding!! Grease the berrins every 200 miles on the way home!! Then after you get home you can disassamble to see how they are and replace if needed! Leave room between you and the other car in front for stoping. We expect pictures after you get home!! No pic no answers!! ;D Good Luck!! |
Re: 1988 WELLCRAFT V20 STEPLIFT
Gentlemen,
Thank you very much for your advice. I will do as you've suggested. I may get the tranny cooler just to be on the safe side... Say, I know I'm getting a bit ahead of myself, but what would you all suggest I do about the sea drive and the engine? The previous two owners have said that the boat was great and had been really good to them with the sea drive. Apparently, the boat has sat for about six months and they say that the engine is now froze up. Neither one of them are mechanically inclined, I'm not much of a mechanic myself, so I'm not sure how serious the problem really is. I'm hoping that a little TLC along with a bit of mystery oil in the cylinders will get her going again. But, if that doesn't work and it turns out that the engine has a much more serious problem, what would you all suggest? Would it be wise to have the engine rebuilt and to power up to a 200 as Skools seemed to suggest? Just curious and trying to think ahead. I'm quite the greenhorn, so excuse me for asking this question. I have a pair of 93 200HP Suzukis. Does the Sea Drive only accept OMC outboards or would one of my Suzukis work? |
Re: 1988 WELLCRAFT V20 STEPLIFT
I'm confused "as usual" what boat did you buy ??/, the one for 4500.00 or for 2-thousand ??
