When we get hit hard and there isn't going to be power for some time, we retreat to the camper.
Has propane gas for cooking heating and even the fridge! Battery's are solar charged, but you still need to be careful at night cause you can drain them running to much stuff.

I use to have a small Gen at one time and it blew, I have never replaced it.

Yall explain this heating oil thing for me? Is it a system run through your house like regular central, just uses oil to heat instead of electric coils? Why? Does it get hotter?

There is a central oil burning furnace which is fed by a large tank of oil. In most of those systems, the furnace produces hot water which is fed through copper pipes to distribute heat throughout the house (either through radiant units or units which blow air over the hot water tubes).

You asked about temperatures. It has been in the teens at night and 20's during the day for about a week here in Indianapolis, IN.

Oil is also used in water filled radiators, or in forced hot air. I have forced hot air with natural gas.

that sounds very pricey to operate a heat system like that.

I think its close what you southern boys pay for air?? I( pay about $1600 a year for Gas, thats heat and hot water.

I think that burning oil evolved from the old days when coal was the norm around here. I remember growing up in houses that still had the old coal chutes and bins. Many of the oil dealers still had names like Joe's Coal & Oil.

BTW....been 75 here for the last week....Im ready for some cooler weather. Shouldnt be running the damn AC in December! Its also like 95% humidity...muggy!!!
