Fuel tank pick up and antisiphon valve

During the process of figuring out my bogging down problem I discovered some nasty looking orange colored crapola in my fuel filter. It looks like rust. Could this be a rusting antisiphon valve? I figure I will check this and the pick up tube so my question is do they just unbolt from the tank and are replacement parts available?

They are normally made of stainless, brass and aluminum.
Normally they unscrew with an open end wrench.
At the top or bottom of the pickup tube there should be a filter screen (probably stainless), check it for cleaning.
If you can see the bolt heads on the sending unit, try to tell if they are stainless, could be the problem. Or some jackass dropped something in the tank, like a bolt or nut.
Also don't rule out the filter rusting on the inside, cut it open and see.

I guess I'll run it off a spare plastic tank to see if that clears up the problem. I thought I got most of the crap out when i drained the tank but I guess not. Thanks for the help.

I took out the pickup and replaced the shut off valve but both looked fine. I ran it on a seperate tank and the bogging down problem remains. Is there any other fuel related issues that I'm overlooking? So far Ive rebuilt the carbs and fuel pump. Changed all filters and checked the tank. I'm beginning to think this may be an ignition problem which would suck fro me being that I'm not good with that kind of stuff.

Change your signature to reflect the make, model and year of the boat and motor, please.

And are you reasonably sure the carb bowls are clean or is it possible there is now more stuff in them?
You cleaned the carbs first, tried the engine and then cleaned the tank and now still have the same problem??

What the hell, put some new plugs in it, just for the meanness of it!!

Plugs are new and still look clean. The carbs were completely dissasembled, cleaned and put back together. I'm thinking ignitio now because it has run well at times even beforethe carbs and fuel pump were rebuilt. Now that I can see there was no real fuel restriction I'm leaning toward ignition. Unfortunately i just don't have the time to screw around with this thing. There's just too many possible problems. I think it may be time to let a mechanic look at it.

How about your ball, does it stay primed or suck in during the bogging? Also how old is it? Any signs of dry rot?

I would also check the spark to make sure you are getting spark in all holes.

your pick up tube is built into the tank??

The ball is new and firm. The pick up tube unscrewed from the tank. There was no screen and it was clean. I'm going to see if I can test the coils tomorrow to start eliminating some electrical problems. Stupid me put the battery cables back in the wrong way so that could have caused some problems. The rectifier is definitely shot.
