V20 with a small OB, what to expect...

I might have to sell the Yamaha 200, I need cash for the house project. Will sell the car, and the motorcycle as well, etc. House a TOP priority. Sons moving with me.
If I sell the 200 ( the V20 stays ), will get a small cheap/used OB to be able to go fishing and/or dr__ing around the bay, so the boat is usable.
Anybody had a 40hp or so on a V20. What to expect speed wise ? I normally just troll around the area.

A V-20 as a displacement hull cruizer..........that should work.

I know several guys on here run kickers, 10 to 25 hp, they should have some numbers for you.

Juan, I have no idea on the 40hp numbers but with my 9.9 kicker I can get close to 7mph. You'll save alot of gas.

One thing I've always heard is there's only so fast your boat can go without planing. If the boat planes at 15 - 20 mph, and you know a 40 won't plane it (pretty safe bet), then my guess is your top end with the 40hp will be somewhere in the 10 - 12 mph range.

Not trying to be a buzz kill, but don't forget the weight difference. You take 300 pounds off the transom and all of a sudden your riding with your bow in the water. I only mention because I took the engine off of a boat before and had to switch trailers. I figured I would just float it off and onto the other trailer. MAN did I have a time trying to float the boat with the stern in the air.

Ferm, that's easy. Once in the water just pull the plug and do a slow 60 count. Nothing like some good ballast.

Yeah i saw a guy trying to pull, I think it was a 29 Jupiter with no motors , wow it was amazing how wild it was one side of the channel to the other side back and forth stern sticking out of the water.

It`s easy to add dead weight in the stern, if it comes to that. ( More beer ? ) Jejeje...

I ran my V with a 175 HP full to the gunnels with water went just fine, But I don't suggest trying it LOL

If you are staying near shore and not in need for speed just about anything will work, but I would try for at least a 100 hp if you can.

I know you are asking about a 40 hp but I thought I would chime in and say a 1984 90hp merc inline 6 will push mine upto 29mph with me (300 pounds) and a full tank of fuel.

Why not a larger cheap/used outboard? There are more old 115s than old 40s out there.
