What is the consensus on what plywood to use for recoring a deck panel? I already got my glass and resin, and cleaned the old piece up. I went down to HOME DEPOT to pick up a sheet of exterior grade plywood, but it was HORRIBLE looking. They had some nice looking PINE, OAK or BIRCH plywood that was sanded on each side, but I didn't know which would stick to resin. I remember SKOOLS posting what to use for reasonable money awhile back, but couldn't find the old post.

AND I HATE FIBERGLASS WORK!
There I feel better now.

I use regular AC or BC plywood. DONT use treated....glass wont stay stuck to it.

No need in marine ply, its too expensive and not necesary....when u glass it, it become at waterproof and "marine" as anything.

I know that PT is out of the question. My main thing was which type? They had OAK, PINE, and BIRCH to choose from. I am no GLASS MAN by no means, and fiberglass is just about #1 on my SH!T LIST.

I use Marine plywood in the past and glass over it no problem , Dixie Plywood sells it . You can also special order it at Home Depot they will have it in within a week , Tip if you call Dixie Plywood directly they will tell you they can only sell to a Buisness however if you show up at the warehouse they have a retail outlet that so happens to be connected to the same building , and of course I was a license contractor for about and hour !!!

I'll check with LOWES tommorrow. They had some that looked really nice at HOME DEPOT with smooth surface and no knots in it, but it was pine and only 5 layers thick.

This is the best plywood I have seen for staying together.
Problem is, the coating on it makes resin almost impossible to stick.
A vigorous sanding will help.
This plywood used to be coated with an oil that had a diesel smell to it, now the coating resembles a wax of some type.

And Stinks right, don't use treated. It's not just the fact nothing will stick to it, the glue will seperate in the layers.
The cabinet grade stuff Skools is referring to is lighter and more rigid (requireing less support), would be the best bet.

In my younger days I done a whole floor in a small boat in PT.....I was NOT happy about a month later...

Ive used regular sanded pine every since....never had a problem..

I've use doug fir marine plywood a/b. It's about $50 for a sheet of 1/2 and $65 for a sheet of 3/4. Also if you can find MDO (what's used for billboard signs) that is a little less and very good quality usually no voids (comes with 1 or two paper faces).

Sometimes you can find a sign supply shop that will sell you old bill boards for $10 a sheet 4/8 3/4" MDO. I bought 15 sheets from a place at $5 each to do shelves for a friends garage.

Well i checked with LOWES today, and there lumber looked HORRIBLE! Even there cabinet grade plywood had knots in it:bat:. So I ended up going to HOME DEPOT and got a sheet of 3/4" sanded ply and had them cut it to size for me on there big saw. For $38 I got a nice piece of ply with NO knots in it, and had it cut to size as well. Hopefully it works out. I'll start another post with progress pics.
