I used to work in a factory and there was a guy that wore a shirt with a pot leaf on it. Above the pot leaf it said:

Mr. Twister

If Stinky will, I will.

I grew up in the 60's, so you know I've done a lot more than pot, but it's been awhile. Personally, I think drugs should be legalized, it would solve a lot of problems. The tax revenue alone would be tremendous. Crime would go way down. The cost savings on the legal system would make it worth it. For those that say they have to protect their children and that somehow making drugs illegal helps in some way, well....you need to get your head out of the sand. I live in a very rural area (average town around 300) and I could get just about any imaginable drug without traveling 10 miles and I don't personally know any dealers. I'm 58 yrs old and I've seen a number of lives destroyed by drugs (including a few people very close to me) and I still say, legalize it.

I always like the arguement of people back in the 60's and 70's use. Remember when you were in high school how easy a joint was to get, but how hard a beer was to get? Legalize it and then it's usage will go down. Once the FDA gets in control it will cost so much nobody could afford it.

Yeah, lets legalize drugs and we can use all the tax money to pay for everyones rehab stays, taking care of the crack babies, paying for all the peolpe hurt and killed by drug impaired drivers, we can send checks to the people who wont go to rehab so they dont have to work, pay for their health care when their bodies give out.

I think legalizing it will solve all the problems, it works just fine with alcohol. Well, as long as you don't count the 16 to 18 thousand people killed by drunk drivers each year in the US, not to mention the ones that are only crippled in the crash.

Whether they are legal or not, drugs, including alcohol and nicotine, cost us all a lot of money (directly or indirectly) that we could spend on our boats instead.

I need a drink after that.:zip:

A couple of comments from the left coast. Actually, from the part of northern California formerly known as the "Emerald Triangle" for all of the marijuana grown outdoors in the old days. My sister-in-law retired as the branch manager of a rural Bank of America in this area. In the old days when people grew outdoors there was a true "harvest season" in Humboldt county. In her little po-dunk B of A branch she would have so much cash deposited that she would have two armored trucks per day arrive to take cash OUT of the bank because it made them a target for a bank heist otherwise.

Today the pot grows are indoors and they are very common . California passed proposition 215 a few years ago legalizing marijuana for "medicinal" purposes. Honestly, there are some uses for MJ that are medically beneficial (reducing occular pressure in glacoma). In general though the application of the law has been a crock of horse pucky. One doctor was in the paper a while ago after he opened a clinic to provide prescriptions ("215 cards") for medical marijuana locally. The thing is, he has clinics all over the state. He flys to them via his own plane and basicly provides the Rx for anyone, for any reason, as long as they cough up the $150 fee for the group sessions he offers. No one is turned down. The card alows the holder to buy pot, smoke it legally and to grow a number of plants for "personal use". My F'n county set the number of plants around 90 which is near the limit at which it becomes a federal crime. The upshot is that indoor pot grows are everywhere. There are 3 dwellings within 150 yards of my house that I know are marijuana grows. It has become a problem because the growers often rent and run their heavy duty lighting setups on inadequate systems. There have been a rash of house fires over the past few years started this way. The growers end up walking away and the home owner gets to hassle with the insurance, rebuild and loss of rental income.

One unanticipated side effect of all of this is that the price has dropped out of the illegal marijuana market. In alot of the rural towns around here, many kids with no vivible means of income drive around in shiny new tricked out 4x4 trucks. You still see the trucks around but now there is a 1/2 cord of firewood in the back with a "For Sale" sign on it.

My two cents on the "drug war": This has been a total failure. What we are doing now isn't working. What will work is ine of two following options...
1) Make the penalty for possession/sales of drugs so F'n harsh that no one will consider doing it. For example, 5 years + for posession of meth. 25 to life for meth sales.

2) Legalize all drugs and tax em. Personally this rubs against the grain but the other side of the issue is that I am tired of paying to incarcerate these folks. Swarzenegger is considering the following as a small part of addressing the 17 billion state budget shortfall this year. (Cut and pasted from a Sacramento newspaper)

"The governor’s proposal would cut the prison population by 22,159 inmates and save the state $256 million in the fiscal year that begins July 1. Savings are estimated at $780 million by 2010. Moreover, the proposal cuts more than 4,000 prison jobs, most of them belonging to guards."

One last note: All that aside I'll probably be joining Chuck after I get my gold watch. The problem is that with social scurity in question, will I ever really get to retire?

Well, as long as you don't count the 16 to 18 thousand people killed by drunk drivers each year in the US, not to mention the ones that are only crippled in the crash. I've never seen a pot smoking speeder. Being a traffic cop, I have. And I have seen many kill themselves and others doing it. I guess I just see the bad side of drugs because of my job.

Whether they are legal or not, drugs, including alcohol and nicotine, cost us all a lot of money (directly or indirectly) that we could spend on our boats instead. That's why I don't smoke, use illegal drugs and only drink on occasion. I simply don't think making it illegal solves anything. As far as pot goes, I think it's less dangerous than alcohol or ciggs. I'm with you, drugs being illegal doesn't stop the problem, but making them legal wont solve it either. Whoever figures out the solution will be a much smarter person than I.

Just some thoughts from someone who has been literally on both sides of the issue in his life.
Cannabis should not be in the same spectrum as the scheduled narcotics and prescription drugs. To do so is as hypocritcal as you can possibly be. Alchohol is much more potentially damaging to society as a whole and it is regulated sold taxed and used thru out the world.
Having used it as a guy growing up and when I was in the service I am very familiar with it.
Once I decided to pursue law enforcement as a career and took an oath of office that put an end to that.
Had it been legalized I probably would have been an occassional user and likely as responsible about it as I have been about alcohol, which I have been known on occassion to dabble in. Can you say nationwide stash.
That being said I have also observed as I am sure many of you have in your lives that some people can drink all night and walk around and act perfectly normal, some have a glass of cheap wine and become your dream date. All in all my observations with mary jane is that other than laughing at sh!t that aint funny and wanting to love the whole world with a giant hug and snacking too much the occassioanl user is very non-offensive.
The effects driving while not as profound as alchohol are none the less very dangerous and Randle is absolutely right on the money with that.
I believe the best course of action is to do with it the same thing that is done with alchohol, regulate tax and control it. Abusers should be treated with the proceeds when needed as should be done with booze too. The fact that it is not done now is another one of the greed crimes our government is guilty of.
The benefits to the US society as a whole would far outweigh the costs, and it would stop making hypocritical criminals of our citizens. If you grew it for your own use or gifting to friends as we do now with wine beer etc. the police should have no buisness being involved with you.
In places where it is decriminalized now there has been no outrageous spikes of abuse or accidents. That says a lot to me.
To put some guy in a lock up for using it in his own home or growing his own is just ludicrous to me. Having common sense restrictions and some professions that have an absolute ban on its use like pilots train operators police officers etc. just as we do with alchohol would serve us all well and save us billions.
JMHO

My dad once told me when I was a kid that the worse thing about MJ is that it will opens the door for you to try other, harder more dangerous drugs. That, I've found to be very true. I was lucky that dad pointed that out to me otherwise I could have been part of the statistics.

Besides, I was happy with MJ. We got along great together!

RIGHT ON WILLY!
That was by far the most intelligent and insightful explanation I have ever read! I partied into my 40's and for 17 of those years I didn't drink a drop. When I was younger I drank a lot, felt like crap and ruined many a pair of shoes pukin' up the expensive booze I bought all night. Couldn't get up in the morning, barely could work when I did get up. Never had that problem with weed. If I smoked too much, worse thing that happened was I woke up the couch in the morning. Never felt like crap and never got sick. I could buy an ounce of weed for less money that I would spend in 1 night drinking, even the good stuff! And it lasted me a lot longer too.I was a single guy, owned my own home, had a truck and a jeep, owned a couple of boats, had $$ in the bank, and worked my a$$ off everyday.... once I quit drinking. I didn't go out too much, usually a few friends would come over and, we would have some dinner, listen to music, have a game night....real harmless stuff. But if the cops had ever come in we would have all been busted for some bull**** crime. When and if the ever decriminalize it, I'll be getting a big ol' bag of "crippy bud", 20 packages of oreo cookies, and I'll be having a big ol' party.

Willy, I have promoted you to the title of "Honorable and Intelligent Senior Assistant Grand Pubah" of the Norton Snagger Fishing Team.
