i JUST got home from looking at one lol...seen a 1990 20 sport center console on thomas drive at the pontoon depot....looks nice from afar :-/...but up close its gets ratty...transom has been redone and its a crap job...and then they put a big aluminum plate on it "to beef it up" the guy says...since they put a 200hp on it.....he wanted $6500....thats when i left lol

i got awhile before i sell mine though.. i got to get my force 125 built back up cuz thats the motor that i'm putting back on it if i sell it....

Is there ever any truth to that statement about beefing up the transom with those plates? I'm gonna go look at a boat on Monday where he's the original owner, yet when he upgraded his power years back, the people at the marina told him to put the plate on since he was moving up to a 200...

Do you simply steer clear of all boats that have them???

I always think they are hiding something!!

Beefing up the transom should happen from he inside with something like I did to distribute the weight.

Better ck well!!

this is what I did when I installed the bracket, same bolt pattern as bracket, 1/2 X 3" flat stock welded to the same size.

never seen a boat with an external plate that didn't need a transom job

Yeah if the transom is strong and rated for the HP you are applying why would you need to beef it up with a plate? I totally understand if adding a bracket why you need to do stuff to the inside but those plates on the outside are a sure sign of problems. I ran my first boat 5 years with a half rotted transom and stainless plate heavy metal repair with a 70 hp. ;D
