View Full Version : Starboard for Fuel Tank Cover

So I have been thinking of replacing my fuel tank cover with Starboard. My current cover has cracks coming from the inspection plates and is just beat up looking. I would have to recore it this year if I'm going to use it another year. I figure I would have to spend about $100 in materials to recore it. I also need a new cover for the hatch in front of the fuel tank. My thinking is I could buy a half sheet and do both covers. Question is, Do you think 3/4 Starboard or Seaboard is structurally strong enough for this application. Remember on the 79's the fuel tank is about 30" wide by 60" long so it spans a large area?

MJ and REEL used starboard on their floors to replace hatch covers. I would say they could help you out.

If you put some reinforcement on the underside it should be ok. But I would think it would be slick as boiled okra when its wet.

i agree.....I would rebuild it rather than starboard...not to mention the cost of 3/4" starboard that size...WHOA!!!!

I was worried about it being slick, I was thinking the non-skid Seaboard would be a better option. If I recore the current cover I will have to grind out the spidercracks and repaint it, I would like to avoid painting the deck. Besides, my fiberglass skills are non-existent. I figured the "seafoam" color seaboard would be a close match to the existing color deck and I can use it the left over material for the small hatch in front of the tank.

Thats good thinking...i havent had expierence with the textured stuff...I hear its more slip resistant but not sure about when its wet...anybody here used it?

3/4 will need no bracing! That stuff strong!!
And yes get the textured stuff, I did not find the 3 hatch covers in the floor to be slippery, but they were smaller then the hole middle of the floor.
Now Up here were I am we have a place that sells Sea Board, same stuff!! Cheaper. and more colors. I have no idea what they charge or were you can find it in your area??
But maybe they can tell you if you call them??
They are at http://www.jfreeman.com/cpg_seaboard.html

Thanks for the info MJ. the deck on my V-20 is not non-skid and I can tell you when it gets wet its like ice. The Seaboard I have seen has a grain to it which seems like it would provide some traction. the problem with the special non-skid seaboard is its only available in grey or polar white and won't match the current deck.

Great find Parish!:sun:
Norristown is not that far from me and the price for a full sheet of 3/4 Seaboard is $211, thats not bad at all. This is why this site is great:nice:

Full sheets are the way to go!! I bought 2 full sheets for the V20, 3/4 and 3/8 I made so many things out of the extra!!
I will be buying another sheet for the Sea Ox soon!

I just emailed them to see if they carry the Seaboard Grip X which is non-skid. I'm concerned the regular Seaboard may be too slippery.

I was thinking the same thing with regard to the sand... Is the starboard paintable as is or does it need to be treated/primered to be able to paint?

Thats one of Starboard and Seaboards drawbacks is that it can't be painted or easily glued. Seaboard is available in about 6 different colors, I would like to find a color that closely matches my existing deck so i don't have to paint. If I can't find a color that matches my existing deck I may just find a paint that matches the seaboard and paint the deck.

No paint, solid color all the way thur! Texture is the way to go, They did not have it when I bought mine but I never had a problem with slip eaither.

They are the same thing!! Starboard is made for the Marine industry, and Seaboard is made for food plants and other stuff.
Ever saee the plastic doors in a food store at the meat dept, yep thats Seaboard!
Plastic walls in the public bathrooms, Yep Seaboard!! Thats why it comes in different colors and is cheaper, doesn't say marine in itys name!
As for painting the deck, you can use sand, but make sure you use a good paint or the sand will just wear down and break out!
For the same price as a good paint you can use Durback and be done!! Great stuff and stands up great!!
I, skools, and a few others have used it with great results!! Someone else is using it right now but I forgot who??
1 Gal should be pleanty, its about $100+

MJ's right...the 3/4 will span the 30" no problem, but don't use any color other than white cause it holds heat from sun in summer and gets too hot ... my lt grey surprised me that way...they actually make a diamond textured surface these days ...

I was checking the old threads about replacing hatches with starboard and found this. Did you seal those hatches in any way or are they free to open and close?
I 'm gonna replace all my hatches with starboard and was curious should I seal or not.

Those are nice fish boxes, and they are suppose to come off all the time, they have drains in the bottom, no sealing needed! Unless you don't want to use them?? But what a waste that would be! I could hold 200 pounds of fish and not a cooler in site!
Yours are different, My boat is a 1975 and there was no gas tank in the floor, they were on the sides, two 20 gal saddle bags, for a total of 40 gal.
