with out the pinion gear, those gears are worthless, I might would use the reverse if I had to(perhaps to fix a clutch dog problem), but never the forward without having the matching pinion

What he said. The pinion and forward are matched at the factory to each other. Plus if you try and put a pinion against them with a different wear pattern, it would almost certainly end in failure with lots of metal. And you can buy aftermarket gear sets for under $300 now.
