And also live here.
In my opinion :
Best Rum ; Ron Don-Q
Best local beer ; Cerveza MEDALLA
Best Local Food Restaurant ; AJILI-MOJILI in the CONDADO area in San Juan
Best Restaurants ; many at El Viejo San Juan
Best local dish/food ; Arroz con Jueyes, Habichuelas y tostones o amarillos fritos.
Best party town ; El Viejo San Juan ( The Old San Juan area of San Juan City )
Best Boating area ; Fajardo City, ( on the East Coast, one hour drive from San Juan )
Best Shoping Mall ( Plaza Las Americas )
Best strip joints, ask the Cab drivers at the Airport, they know what is open every day, and where they are.
Must visit ; Castillo de El Morro ( Old Castle ). El Viejo San Juan. Go deep sea fishing from San Juan ( Charter Boat ).

Have fun !!!

Juan

Thanks for the GREAT pictures REELAPEELING !!!
Hope you had a good time...

First, let me appologize for not offering you my help, but I have been in Oklahoma City since the first week of January ( I work for the FAA, and we get our trainings here ), I will be back to P.R. around the 5-6 of Feb. If anybody goes there, let me know PLEASE.
That pictures looks very familiar to me, because we hang around that exact area. Note that I said on my last post that the best-boating is on the East coast, well, like you mentioned, the water viz was low, and it is beause at this time of the year, the ocean there gets rough ( heavy under water currents ). And for us Puertorricans, the wind gets a little cold, so most boaters don`t sail. And scuba/snorkelling is not easy.
Next to Palomino ( you took the Hotel ferry I guess ) there is another island named Icaco, and also a small one named Palominito. All those islands get packed with boats and beach goers, and it becomes a huge party. I have seen around 300-400 or more boats anchored next to the islands on good sundays. Rule, there, land is a "protected" natural habitat, so we are not allowed to tie on dry sand/shore, everybody has to anchor, or tie to another anchored boat. There are numerous permanent moorings ( fixed anchors if I may ), but they get taken by the early going boaters. The boat on the picture, is exactly how everybody anchors, stern facing the beach, so the owner can sit on the fishing deck, and enjoy his drink/food from her "balcony". Sometimes there are rows of parallel tied boats 10-15 boat long, just like I have seen here on the States on lakes.
Going there on a Sunday, is a boaters-dream, boats all sizes from 10 to 80-90 feet long, all tied together, everybody with a good-happy-relaxed-respectfull camaradery, music ( some boaters have AWESOME audio systems ) and a most beautiful view.
Water there in summer time, is fairly clean ( I have seen better ), you can perfectly see the ocean bottom @ 20-30 feet deep. Turtles, fish, huge jellyfish, and sometimes even Manatees, can be seen from the boat. Diving is really good at that time.
Close to there, is another island named Culebra ( bigger, there is a town ), and it has one the "10 most beautiful beaches of the World", article by an international Travel Magazine. She is trully beautifu, water so clear, you can not tell dept by looking at the bottom from the boat. 50-60 feet deep seems 10 feet deep. Water is THAT clear. And its sand, white as white-out almost, and the sand is so fine that you walk on it barefooted and feels like baby powder almost, I`m not bragging, thats God`s work for sure.
I certainly invite you to visit those places, and if you Scuba/snorquel, you will love it ( your kids will too very much, it is very safe ).
Please let me know if you or anybody is going there again, and if I`m there, I will personally take you on Pestanas ( Eyelashes ) our beloved and heavily sailed V20, for a good Party day at one of those islands ( we do it almost every weekend anyways, jejeje ), just bring a 5 gallon pail of #50 sunblock lotion !!!!

Any questions ? I love talking.... as you can see....

Your friend in P.R. Johnny
( the three letters on JJJtronics mean, Johnny, Juan Jr. and Jorge, me and my two sons )

Take care man !!!
