Question

I recently replaced my lower unit water pump. Not before I overheated , unfortunately. While getting my repairs done, my mech told me I will soon need to replace my manifolds and risers. I want to know if this is something a reasonably mechanically inclined person can do with the aid of the Clymer's manual or if I should leave it to the pro's as I did the water pump.
How involved is the job? Any special tools needed?
BTW, the motor is a Marine Power 350 I/O with the Mercruiser Alpha 1.
And NO, MJ, I am NOT hanging a bracket off my stern yet! ;D

Manifolds and risers are a fairly easy job that most anyone with basic mechanical ability can tackle.
Water pump kit in the lower unit isn't particularly difficult either but you've already got a mechanic working on that.
The hardest part on both jobs is getting the mounting bolts out. On a car engine, manifold bolts remove easily because they are subjected to constant heat. Boat motors don't (or at least shouldn't) reach the same temperatures. Still, I've never had too much difficulty getting the bolts out. Use some good marine grade anti-sieze when re-installing. ;)

Thats ok you will spend spend and spend some more then you will relise the the great Maco was right all the time and will then hang the bracket!!
But not before you spend 5 time the amount that it would cost you to do it right now!!

CB, thanks for the advice. I have decided to do the replacement myself. Of course, I will wait until the offseason so I won't miss any fishing days if I screw up!

I am just bitter after buying a I/O!!
I thought life was going to be good and all i did was get craped on every time I turned around!!

I no pleanty of people with I/O and they are happy. But all complain about the little things that nickle and dime you to death!!

Your right I love my bracket and recomend everyone to do it!! But thats not always as easy for people as it was for me.

You will be fine I am sure, just don't break any of them rusty bolts ;)
