As others have posted in the past go to iboats.com. Go to the forum section. There is a mercury section where other merc owners will be able to help you. I have a 150 Force and have gone to iboasts myself for help! Merry Christmas! Bill Mc ;D

I think that's a common Merc problem. They all have quirks and that's one that I've heard of with Merc. You will get a lot of useful info off of iboats.com

I've got an 88 Merc 150 on my V-20 as well. Had to do a stator a couple of years ago right after i bought it. Loose battery connections will eat stators. Get rid of the wingnuts if present and put Nylock nuts on your battery terminals if you haven't already. Also it's good procedure to go through the terminal block on the motor and make sure all connections are clean and tight.
Good luck,
