there are two small gouges right on the keel just below the bow eye. they are a bit larger than your thumb nail and about 3 to 6 mm deep. they are through the gelcoat and down to the fiberglass. obviously this is something that needs to be addressed but should i use marine tex or fiberglass? and why?

Gelcoat patch is all you need. I personally don't like marine tex due to it is greasy and the oil base will run into the surrounding glass and cause the gelcoat to either crack or discolor after time.

I agree with Skools, I have used the gelcoat patch kit from West Marine in the past with success. Its easy to use and apply and dries hard as a rock. I found one good tip for applying the gelcoat is to wet your finger to smooth it out works like a charm. I have never tried tinting it w/color but I would think just plain white should be fine on the V20.

but will i be able to lay it on thick enough to build up 3 to 6 mm? while not to deep, it seems to be slightly more than just the top skin coat.

show us a close up picture of your damage but you can build it up alot and even in several coats then sand it with super fine sandpaper. Then buff it out, job done.

I believe Wellcraft called the color of our boat "Glacier white." I remember seeing a site that was selling gelcoat to match the manufacturers colors. I think they were somewhere in FL. I'll check my computer when I get home, I think I saved a link.

yeah but gelcoat fades and yellows over time so it would have to be matched still.

This is them: http://www.minicraft.com/

edit: I tried Minicraft on my 92 whaler. Color match was a problem for me. They even told me the match probably wouldn't be good because of color fade over the years. I got it pretty close, added a little brown that I picked up at West Marine. I wouldn't expect a perfect match on a V20. If I remember, the kit was about a $100 but I think I added something extra......I can't remember, was about 4-5 years ago. Good product, check em out, just don't expect perfect color match.

OK, it's coming back to me now after checking the site out. It wasn't a "kit", I had to buy everything seperate. Anyway, here is all the Wellcraft colors, only goes down to 1985.
