View Full Version : More trouble with my controls!

I'm at the end of a frustrating day. My Sturgeon fishing trip was interrupted when my boat got stuck in reverse. I took a closer look at the controls and found that they had been band-aided together by the previous owner. What is missing is a metal insert that keeps the cable sheath from sliding while the cable slides in and out. Here is a photo of the area where the insert would go:

And here is a shot of the other cable that shows what the broken one should look like:

And here is a closeup of the insert that I need:

Does anyone know where to get one of these? Does anyone have an old set of controls that I could buy for parts or to replace my whole setup?
This is a factory set of controls (I'm assuming) that is on a 1980 model. Maybe it's just time to replace them. I don't know...
Thanks in advance for your advice on this!

Cliff, I sure hope someone here can help, but I'm afraid it might be time for new...at any rate, that PO bamboozled you on those controls!
Good luck buddy.
P.S. Please tell me you didn't have to make it back to the dock in reverse. That would be very, very, bad :-[

Thanks for the quick responses.
I was getting ready to go back to the ramp in reverse when the coast guard came by, so I flagged them down. They were very helpful once I proved to them that I had all of my necessary safety gear.
The motor is a 305 Chevy. The controls are from an unknown manufacturer, but there is a model number: M-1100-DIA. I really hope you can help. That would be great. Here is a photo of the controls:

CP - That control set looks like it's a universal unit. You could pick up a new set of controls or visit Rancho Marine Recyclers.
Don't be affraid of using a nice set of vice grip shifters :) shift forward (PULL)
Shift reverse (PUSH)

BS- Thanks for advice. If "Skools" can't find what I need, I guess I'll have to search elsewhere!
Skools - If you can't find that part, I'd be glad to discuss buying one of your other used or new control units.
Thanks!

Happy ending! I took BS's advice and looked up a marine "recycler" in Sacramento. I found a partial set of controls (broken) that just happened to be exactly the same as mine. It was missing several parts, but not the one that I needed! I grabbed that and looked around the yard for a while, where I found a bow roller and bought it for $30. It lists in the West Marine catalog for $195! I'll be going back there for sure! Thanks for your help BS.

Cliff - I'm glad that it worked out for you!! There are a few recyclers around here . . . Rancho Marine Recyclers, Shipwreck Marine, and there's one in stockton too. I'm a cheap bastard, so when I need boat parts . . . it's the recyclers, ebay, craigslist, or forum classifieds. 90% of the time you'll find what you need. Those recycler places even have stainless screws and bolts!!! It's totally worth it just to stock up and fill a coffee can.
West Marine bends you over coming and going . . . so I try to avoid the pain and suffering at all cost.
