Hey Mulv.
The wife wouldnt give up her hair dryer. Think she knew it wouldnt come back or come back with black paint all over it. Used the heat gun. Stripes came off well. Just alot of glue now to remove. tried using goof off, byt that didnt work. Will try what you said, acitone.

Thanks Brothers.
Off to the boat now to get the glue off from the boot striping. Install bim top, deck drains.
Looks like I wont be going with a hard top. Price changed and is out of my price. Will be having a local guy enclose all 4 sides of the bim in June I figure.

Hammer, Mulv is right. Acetone is the ticket for getting that stuff off quick and easy...

tried the acetone and wasnt working. Used the other stuff of goo off, well, it removes tar, glue....and FREAKIN bottom Paint. The run off took off my bottom paint. Man, I just cant get ahead. !!.
Will lightly sand the sides friday and repaint. I am not RESANDING THE BOAT !!.
P.S. Working out details today on my shark/ a.k.a. Flying tigars mouth. She will be hopefully looking pretty mouthy come next week I hope. ;D

Skools,
The boot stripes were waisted big time. Torn up and pealing in spots. Also had a older set under top set.
I can feel a thin lip where the bottom paint stops and meets the gelcoat. Dont like it. Hopefully I can smooth the edge out with the sander, but wondering when I sand, will the color fade ??

put a black stripe over the place to smooth it out that way you won't notice the seam between the paint and gelcoat.

Skools is right on the money as usual. That would look sweet!
I toyed with the idea of sanding the gel coat once the boot stripe is removed, but I'm not sure that's a good idea. Sanding will actually remove some of the gel coat rather than fade it.
I'd go with Skools advice...

Hammer, The acetone will work, don't be afraid to put a lot on a rag and really rub it in. Also letting the acetone soak into the adhesive a little longer before you try wiping it off may be the answer. My stripe is raised under where the original boot stripe was removed from. I wet sanded the stripe lightly to blend it in with the rest of the hull and it worked ok. You can still see where the old boot stripe was but you cant notice when its in the water and thats all that really matters. Boats only need to look good on the water, not on the trailer.

Skool,
Should I run the black boot stripe flush with the black bottom paint, or can I go slightly overtop of the paint. Not sure if the boot stripe will stick to the bottom paint.
Speaking of bottom paint, Looks like I'll be sanding in the morning. That goof off really damaged the bottom paint. Its all soft. Gonna try and sand it off and do it AGAIN !!. One step forward and three steps back !! :-[

it should stick to the bottom paint i'd put the stripe with a 50/50 over lap on each half on bottom paint half on the gelcoat. i'd get the 2 inch stripe. make the stripe straight and then it won't matter ifthe bottom paint is a little off.

Hammer,
Sometimes I use WD-40 to remove adhesive, it usually works pretty good.
Good luck,

If you did not have access to electric what would be the best way to remove the boot stripe? Razor blade and then acetone? That's my weekend project.

razor blades will gouge your gelcoat. Been there messed up already. park it in the sun on a 95* day and it will peel off that afternoon.

I've had good success removing boat numbers with a hair dryer.

Acetone is incredible but dries fast so use a lot. It wont hurt the paint or gel coat like oven cleaner will. Use a single edge razor blade to help it along but be careful. Frank

Also don't use that acetone w/o gloves, it soaks right into your skin and is real bad sh!t, also do not use it w/o a breeze blowing or a fan on it, it will give you a major (and bad) high.

Back on track today. Boat is finally finshed again with bottom paint. Working on deck drains and fish rod holders along with boot stripe, but want the paint to cure before applying stripe.
