I'm getting ready to put my 74 CC back in to shape for fishing. I decided to repaint the deck ,gunnels and topside with Pettit white epoxy paint and primer, everything is in good shape {I need to fill a bunch of screwholes} but the paint is worn thru in spots. The last owner had a OMC on it and he hacked the hell out of the mounting face of the CC I have all new gauges, helm. steering wheel, breaker panel and compass. I need some sugestions on what I can do , cut it out and replace with marine plywood ,Starboard? I need some ideas.......

Starboard over the whole mess! ;) I did it to the top of my console on the CC. Check my gallery pics.

Thats what I did!! Starboard all the way!

I got a piece of 1/4 white from the scrap pile at a local boat mariner, for $10

Little blurry, but I used a piece of 1/4 starboard. *No motor on this boat right now, so still no guages.http://www.wellcraftv20.com/gallery/albums/album33/S2010113.sized.jpg

Did you cut out a large part of the top or is the starboard just laided over the top, and what thickness is it and can you mount the helm on it with just the starboard....

chumbucket
04-07-2006, 11:26 PM
I used 1/2" thick material laid right over the top. Just made sure the surface was smooth. Yes, you can mount the helm right onto the Starboard. 1/2" would be plenty strong enough for that.

The starboard looks nice I went to the shop and bought the stuff today and I have to pick it up Monday they will cut to size for me. I didn't have a router but on the way there I stopped at a estate sale and got a nice Craftsman router for ten dollars. I got the 1/4 round bit from Sears I'm ready for this project now,Thanks guys nice work.....

reelapeelin
04-09-2006, 12:36 AM
Hey, Blu...play w/the depth on that router-bit B4 you do final round-over...If you leave it just a HAIR deep, it'll leave a nice ''reveal'' or sharp shoulder above the round...I like the way it looks, but you may not...get your final cut-outs made and sand edges REEL smooth...practice on some scrap 1st... ;)...

Oh yeah...counter-sink those screws, too...

I corresponded with Blu via e-mail last night and gave him a more detailed explaination of routing and countersinking holes and general fabrication. I think he'll do well. ;)

We got a ways on refinishing the insides I started to patch all the screw holes with Marine-Tex only have a few more to go. The starboard will be ready tommorrow. We removed everything from the inside It was easy, look how hacked up the console is. You can see the new jack plate too...Ted

Blu, once you get that console finshed and resurfaced w/Starboard, it'll look like brand new...if it was me, I'd pull the wheel and 1/2" Starboard over that entire surface...

And that jackplate gives you an opportunity to extend the height of your transom to keep those ''hi-rollers'' out of the back 8)

Oh yeah...GREAT PICS!! ;D ;D 8)...

macojoe
04-11-2006, 12:42 PM
Yea that dash needs to be pimped with starboard!!

But before you screw it all down try the steering wheel to see that you have 1/2" extra for the shaft and then the wheel??

Might not have the clearance? I had a problem on another boat with that. Had to cut a hole in the center for steering so it would fit.

Blue_Runner
04-11-2006, 01:15 PM
Router? I thought that's what sandpaper was for ::)

Cheating wussies! :P

chumbucket
04-11-2006, 01:32 PM
MJ, I think Blu's plan is to cut a large rectangle out of the fiberglass console just an inch or two smaller in dimension than the Starboard will be. That way all his controls will only be set into 1/2" thick material. Not the 1/2" of Starboard plus the remaining fiberglass.

reelapeelin
04-11-2006, 05:31 PM
With all that support gone, wonder if he doesn't need to use 3/4" S-board...thinkin' about the steering wheel out in the middle of the panel w/only 1/2'' of support...doesn't SOUND stiff enough... :)...

Oh, and BR...damn right a router!! ;) ;D...

Blu_Lunch
04-11-2006, 06:43 PM
The local marina here also said 1/2 is more than strong enough. I spent the afternoon sanding Marine-Tex once I get the paint on the deck the holes will be impossible to see they are nice and flush now....

macojoe
04-11-2006, 08:31 PM
well we told you that, what you no trust us?? :'(

Blu_Lunch
04-11-2006, 09:51 PM
The parts guy said 1/2 is strong to hold me { I'm 6 foot 4 1/2 340 lbs} I thought about it after reading the posts this afternoon I'm only going to remove the area above the helm for the gauges and breaker box with switches. Nearly finished with the screw hole repairs in the hull I ran out of Marine-Tex yesterday and had to finish today I only have about 10 holes left to sand. I started to sand and clean up the console, tommorrow I am going to get the hull washed out and de-waxed I want to primer it Friday.....I keep you posted.....Ted

reelapeelin
04-13-2006, 08:55 AM
Blu, there's no question the 1/2'' will "hold" it if you took out all the panel...but there are some things that have a better ''feel'' to them w/ more support and for my money, a steering wheel is one of them... ;)...I think you're doin' the right thing by leavin the bottom of the panel in... :D...

Looking good Blu. That Pettit primer. Is that a two part epoxy ?? That Marine tex. Is that the white putty looking stuff ??, I have a bunch of snap rings that use to be for some kind of cover. I wanted to pull all the snaps off and fill the holes. Sounds the the marine tex is easier then grinding down each hole, laying cloth then filling with filler.

Blu_Lunch
04-16-2006, 01:30 AM
The primer is 1 part a single can. The Marine-Tex is white but comes in grey also that is 2 part, the small screw holes I just filled the larger ones I backed with a piece of styrene it cures hard as glass but sands like wood. I liked it. It sure was nice to see all the holes disappear with the primer coat.....

I beilive it was Macojoe said that the extra .500 from the starboard will have to be removed so the bezel will sit down so the wheel will slide on the shaft fully. I work in a machine shop during lunch I can do "Goverment Work" can I mill .500 from the back face of the bezel and accomplish the samething? The entire fuel system *was reinstalled today with all new hoses and water separater. The screw on the tank that the sending wire goes on is stripped I cant take it off tighten or loosen it just spins can I solder a wire to it?. The sending unit works......

I like the rumble of the motor. I just came back from dinner turned the water on hit the choke and blipped the key and it roared to life.....This motor starts better than my truck.......Friday I'm taking a 1/2 a day off and bringing it down to a local lake 10 mintues from here it has a nice deep launch and I taking it for my first ride in a V-20.........................I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!!
