I am trying to get some ideas for my buddys 70 Johnson. It is a 96 model and is cutting off when up to speed. It runs great and doesnt hesitate a bit till you get up and oing good and then it just dies. Instantly. There is no hesitaion or bogging down or anything. It will crank back up and run great again for a minute till it does the same thing again.

What yall think? Sounds electrical to me...maybe a faulty kill switch? It has one of those kill switches built into the ignition and it doesnt work when u pull the clip so I installed a separate one. We left the clip in the old one just in case it decided to start working again.

Fuel pump maybe? Does the ball stay primed?

I don't know what else would cause it.

Fuel bulb stayed firm. We checked that.

Do you think it could be the pump though and just start right back up and run fine again?

Could it possibly be an obstruction blocking the fuel pick up in the tank?

I guess so, but there again I just dont feel like its a fuel problem because it starts right back up. ???

I could be wrong though, Ive been wrong before..when I thought Willy was straight. ::)

WHEN MY I/O HAD PROBLEMS, IT WOULD RUN GREAT FOR A MINUTE THEN DIE, SOUNDS LIKE WHAT YOUR BUDDYS IS DOING.

THE PROBLEM WITH MINE WAS THE TIMING WAS SET WRONG.

An obstruction can cause your primer bulb to collapse (suck in).

I don't know if that's your problem, I'm thinking not, but probably would be simple enough to run it on a separate fuel line and portable tank to eliminate the possiblity of an obstruction.

Other than that, and the fuel pump, I would have to consult the experts on this site. Skools could probably help as he is a "Johnson" man. ;)

I think we will run it separate just to eliminate the fuel thing.

Willy is a "Johnson man" too, but thats another story. ::)
